Supposing one has a GQ about a controversial topic. The actual answer may be a factual one. But due to the controversial nature of the topic, it is likely that there will be different responses, which will cause, in all likelihood a GD style debate. Is the proper forum for this OP the GQ forum or the GD? (I seem to recall a moderator commenting that all political and such issues have their place in GD).
I actually had such a question the other day, deliberated over where to put it, and have since forgotten what it was.
I wrote out the OP (with carefully constructed sentences saying stuff like “I’m looking for the factual information about this narrow slice of this larger issue”, emailed it to the mods of GQ, asking what they thought. In that particular case, they said they felt it was a legitimate GQ, go ahead and post, and they’d check in to make sure that it kept to GQ, and that’s how it got handled (of course, in that particular case, no one had hard facts to post, but it still kept out of debating territory)>
My personal opinion - if you have a General Question, put it in General Questions. If some other yahoo tries to turn it into a Great Debate, that’s their look-out.
