IMHO your daughter did absolutely nothing wrong.
These events sound so lame I would hardly call them “sexist” anything.
Here’s the thing. I have no problem calling people whatever they want to be called and treating everyone with a basic level of respect. But I don’t think the world needs to walk on eggshells to worry about offending the x% of people who for whatever reason don’t identify with the traditional “binary” genders.
Your daughter is absolutely right. Everyone else gets to go to one event. Shawn needs to pick a gender for this particular evening.
I would also tell your SIL that you have received their family’s RSVP as “not attending” and will make their place available to other guests. In fact, I would un-invite them for insulting my daughter.
