Gender, sexual orientation and pet preference

Just wondering about pet preference among different demographics. Feel free to turn this into a man vs woman, gay vs straight, cat vs dog thread, preferably all at the same time and mixing them all up.

How you voted will NOT be made public.

nvm

I voted straight man and prefer cats, but it is a very equivocal preference. I had dogs for many years and currently get a vicarious dog fix through my neighbor’s/friend’s dogs that share a backyard with me. My only real reason for preferring cats right now is that they are less work in most respects. Once I’m retired a decade or so down the road I may well get a dog or two again to help keep myself active. Generally speaking I like both for different reasons.

I’m a straight woman and I put “prefer dogs”, but I actually have a cat and no dogs. I do think of myself as a “dog person” despite my present catty situation.

Same here. I love my cats (and most cats), but do generally prefer dogs. We don’t have any at the moment, but only because we live in an apartment and I don’t want dogs until we have a yard.

I prefer dogs but don’t have one because my wife prefers No Pets. Since she’s the one at home all day, we have no pets (except fish).

Straight man, 100% cat person.

Can’t vote.

I like both sexes, and like both species, but prefer cats by a nose. Mainly for lifestyle reasons – I’m just too busy to take care of a dog properly, so I don’t get one.

I should have thought of that option. Don’t jump on me bi people, even though you’re just confused : )

Couldn’t vote.

Straight female with one dog and one cat. It was a Sophie’s Choice; I couldn’t decide which I love more.

Can’t vote. Cats, usually one at a time.

Can’t vote. Bisexual male who prefers dogs, but likes cats pretty well too.

I know that this poll is trying to prove/disprove that there is a cultural association that dogs=masculine cats=effeminate. You might be able to extend it to sexual preference, although the media stereotype is that gay guys like little teacup dogs.

I’ve run into this a bit it real life; people think it’s weird when some masculine man likes cats. Personally, if I may stereotype further, everyone knows that men are lazy schlubs who can’t lift a finger to help around the house because that means getting off the couch. In that case cats are the best option.

So, Miller, you’re bipetual?

Straight man. Absolutely love dogs. I’m OK with cats and currently live with one (my mom’s) but I would never want to buy one on my own. I can’t wait to be financially stable enough to buy a dog, if not several.

Straight man, narrowly prefers dogs but still likes cats.

If I’m visiting you, I’d rather play with your dog than your cat. But when it comes to ownership, I’m much happier with how low-maintenance cats are.

I’m not a dog or a cat person. I’m a furniture person.

(I have a cat, though.)

Straight man, and like them both. Currently have four dogs and 12 cats (my wife is a little nuts when it comes to taking in animals in need.)

How do they get along? I used to get huge fights between two female cats and they were mother and daughter. The two brother cats got along well through.
