This is based on a conversation Mrs. Rastahomie and I had one night. We were trying to determine who had been the furthest North, East, South and West. The rule was, they had to be places we had driven (or been drivn to); flights didn’t count.
For example, Mrs. Rastahomie:
NORTH: LaCrosse, WI.
EAST: New York, NY
SOUTH: Orlando, FL
WEST: Spokane, WA
Me:
NORTH: Madison, WI
EAST: New York, NY
SOUTH: Miami, FL
WEST: Wichita, KS
North: Quebec City, Quebec
South: Key West, Florida
East: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
West: San Antonio, Texas (not sure if that counts - I’ve driven to Houston and I’ve driven from Houston to San Antonio, but I flew on the trip to Houston when I drove to San Antonio)
North: Circle, AK (the Northern Circle, Alaska–this is when I lived in AK), from L.A. (where I’ve lived most of my life) I once drove to San Luis Obispo to go to a Renaissance Faire.
South: San Diego, CA
West: Santa Monica, CA (c’mon, I live in L.A. county, can’t go much farther west!)
East: Silver Dollar City, MS (during a family vacation with my grandparents from OKC)
I’m not sure I understand what is meant by “flights don’t count”? If you flew part of the way and then drove, does that count? Because I have “homes” on two continents, and the only reasonable way to get from one to the other is to fly…
Furthest north: North Cape, Norway
Furthest east: I think Tornio, Finland.
Furthest south: Houston, Texas, USA
Furthest west: tricky. We flew to San Francisco once, rented a car and drove around (outside the city). If that doesn’t count, then Houston again.
If you absolutely insist on only counting places I’ve been driven to from my place of birth, then furthest north and furthest east are both in Maine, but i’m not sure exactly where.
North: Toronto, Canada
South: Clearwater Beach, Florida
East: Hard to judge, but without looking at a map, I’d say Myrtle Beach, SC
West: Indianapolis, Indiana (yes, that’s lame–especially considering I live in Ohio)
If you change it so that flights are allowed, both South and East become Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Spooje, do you live in Hawaii? If not, how the hell did you drive there?
I’ve got a pretty good spread, and it’s all been driven.
North: Riviere-du-loup, New Brunswick, Canada
South: Kissimee, FL
East: Fredrickton, New Brunswick, Canada
West: San Fancisco, CA
On a side note, if you have the chance to drive across country - do it. I drove from Portland, ME to SF by myself in my wife’s Honda Civic, loaded with everything we owned (my wife’s company flew her out so she could start early, that’s why I was going solo).
For starters, I personally don’t drive. These are places I have been to in a car, with my family (ugh) or taken a bus to. The OP was kind of confusing though, I think it assumed there was only one possible starting point.
North: Somewhere in southern Montana. Unless you count my bus ride from Paris to Calais, which is farther north than Montana.
South: Nuweiba’, Sinai, Egypt. I got there from J’salem by bus. If that doesn’t count, San Diego.
East: Well, Sinai is pretty far east. But if I answer the question they way I THINK it was meant, the farthest east I have ridden in a car is from the coast of California to Yellowstone Park.
West: Uhhh…well, I started out in San Francisco, not very far to go.
North: vicinity of Ely, Minnesota (47.9º North lattitude) East: Machias, Maine (67.5º West longitude) South: vicinity of Crab Orchard, West Virginia (38.7º South lattitude) West: Banks, Idaho (116.1º West longitude)
NORTH:
Anchorage, Alaska (By ship, courtesy of the Navy.)
Seattle, Washington (By bus.)
Rocky Mountain National Park (By motorcycle.)
WEST:
Honolulu, Hawaii (By ship, courtesy of the Navy.)
San Francisco (By bus and by motorcycle.)
SOUTH:
Kahoolawe Island, Hawaii (By ship. Actually, the waters just south of the island. It’s uninhabited, and the Navy uses it as a firing range.)
Key West, FL (By motorcycle.)
EAST:
Baltimore, MD (By bus.)
Kennedy Space Center (By motorcycle.)
