Geoguessr

Anyone else playing? I got a bit of a high score today for me today, without any googling, here.

This is fantastic. The points really ramp up when you’re extremely close. Nailing Hong Kong was clutch there.

Lotsa fun. I usually read the SDMB during lunchtime, but today I filled the time with Geoguessr.

11241 (after about 10 goes of it…). This is pretty cool. Lots of Australian bush in there…

There’s a lot of Australian bush  I actually went for quite a few games before it gave me any, and since then I’ve had loads. The quirks of the random number generator, I suppose.

Nice. I’m sharing this with my kids at school tomorrow.

Inspired by today’s xkcd cartoon perhaps?

This idea may have come from the dope, although it’s probably the sort of thing that people can come up with independently.

eta: My personal best is 12606 at the moment. It sucks nailing one or two and then biffing one.

Are we not supposed to use google?

I got stuck with one that was just a single panoramic photo of a beach in Malta. No ability to move, or see any other pictures. On the plus side, the guy included his attractive girlfriend in the shot, so it wasn’t a total loss.

I got one that was right on a big sign that said “Port Hardy” and scrolling around there were street signs, i nailed that one about .0006km away.

Googling “mapcrunch game” brings up a whole host of previous mentions of making a game out of mapcrunch.com, including reference of the site’s creator doing so for the purposes of making it a game. Not only that, there seems to be a huge subcommunity dedicated to the game on Tumblr.

Oh my gosh - I didn’t realize you could drive around! This changes everything.

Freaking Australia, man.

It’s not just Australia. Middle of nowhere 2-lane highway somewhere in the southwest US is pretty brutal too. Or middle of nowhere 2-lane highway somewhere in the boreal forest in Canada. Oops, missed by 3500km.

I just scored 27,554 points which I believe is my personal best.
I also got one .004 KM away. In other words, ~12 feet. It was worth 6,479 points.

I got around 32,000 the other day after getting five signed intersections in a row.

It’s more fun using Google than just guessing I think. Just got 29950, and would have got over 30k if I knew my Cyrillic alphabet and hadn’t thought I was in Volzhky instead of across the river in Volgograd. :stuck_out_tongue: Need to start paying more attention to where my starting point is before I drive around though.

Woot! Just got 14,665. I was helped by one of the places, where a simple scroll showed a big sign for “Ketchikan, Alaska’s First City.” Or something close to that.

Don’t feel bad. We’re cheating to get 32k. Which I just did, in spite of one of the locations being on top of a ski hill in South Korea with no way to drive around looking for signs. Just lucky that googling ‘ski hill in korea’ put me 2.5km from the panaroma shot. Oddly enough, one of my locations was also in Ketchikan.
