Wooohooo, near perfect score in Geoguessr, 24996

For those who don’t know geoguessr.com is a fun little geography game website with games that involve being shown a picture and trying to guess where it is using an embedded world map.

Far and away my best ever. It was on the Famous place round obviously and 4 of the 5 were very easy.
First picture; Clearly Notre Dame in Paris, 5 yards away 5000pt
2nd; Leaning Tower of Pisa, in the middle of an intersection for clear location 3 yards, 5000pt
3rd, Tower of London, was pretty sure on load up, and a spin around brought Tower bridge into view. About 40 Yards away(I dispute it really, but not an option) 4998 points
5th, On the Golden gate bridge very near the north end, 9 Yards, 5000 pt.

The 4th one I am proud of though. Massive open square kinda place. Had a big building with Russianish letters, but didn’t really look like Russian; One word spoke to me being “museum”. Behind me was a statue on a big ass pedestal. A little walk around and there was a flag pole. Yay! But the flag was completely limp and flaccid, Boo! Flag was a field of red with the slightest bit of Gold peaking through the collapsed folds. Not many flags like that at all, but deep memory of one in the Near Asian area, Kyrgyzstan Maybe?

I pulled up the guessing map, and zoomed in on the capitol Bishkek. Immediately the name of a square came into view.
Another flick of the scroll wheel and “State History Museum” popped onto the map adjacent to the square. One more scroll and “Manas Statue” appeared. By then I didn’t quite remember where the game origin point was exactly, and missed by a couple dozen yards for another 4998.

I just played a round for the first time in ages. I opted for The World rather than Famous Places. I scored 24,449. Four very close guesses in Paris, southern Japan, Ireland, and Detroit. Missed on somewhere in Tennessee vs somewhere in North Carolina.

I’ve started doing the Daily Challenge, which has a three minute time limit so it’s a lot of pressure, and easier to just guess generally in the vague area it might be. Usually I get something between 13000 and 18000, as they often drop you in the middle of Brazil or Russia or one of the 20 countries in Eastern Europe that all use the same language, and you’ve got diddly’s chance. But sometimes you luck out with some guessable ones.

Last week I got my best score in that round of 24,387.

Is this a common issue in that game?

Not common, though I have seen some people end up in a theme park in Japan that does that.

Also if you’re in South America, where everyone either speaks Spanish or a language almost identical to Spanish, or if you’re in Eastern Europe, where every sign has subtle variations on Cyrillic, it’s easy to think you’re in Portugal when you’re in Chile, or think you’re in Greece when you’re in Mongolia.

I just tried it. My first game ever, famous places. I got 23,229 points. It was kind of fun.

Pretty crappy website… first have to create a pointless login, then play once and have to wait a day, and three of the locations were just generic roads and/or driveways.

You can choose from hundreds of maps, you don’t just play the one challenge.

Right. Sometimes you have to cruise around for a while to pick up clues. You decide how many clues you need.

I played that game obsessively until one day I got a perfect score of 32,395. Immediately my compulsion ended and I haven’t revisited it since. I feel sort of sad about that.

That must have been a long time ago, they changed the scoring system since then, and added loads new maps and game options.

I just deleted it from my phone- I enjoyed it, but an update eliminated all game modes except for a competitive “battle royale”, and allowed only limited plays without a 3$/month subscription.

It’s a shame, really enjoyed it. I could accept limited plays, but why would anyone want to play competitively?

24,989. Almost.

24,997. :muscle:
