George C. Scott has said in interviews that he personally didn’t like Patton at all. There’s a biography of Patton by a gentleman who served under Patton in WW II and in one of the notes in the book, he states that whatever inaccuracies there may be in the film, Patton himself would have approved of the manner in which he was presented. So if Scott were attempting to discredit Patton, he’s failed.
Scott’s also participated in other programs discussing Patton, and while Scott’s mentioned his dislike of Patton (and Scott did a lot of research for the role), he’s never said anything to indicate that he thought Patton was a blood thirsty maniac or that he tried to portray Patton as anything other than he was.
The family was contacted by the filmmakers before they started shooting the movie to get their input, but because they had the misfortune to call on the day when Patton’s widow was buried, the family was too distraught to participate and turned down the invitation (this is why the film focuses solely on Pattons military career).
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the TV movie Scott also made about Patton, The Last Days of Patton. Maybe she saw that one - it is a somewhat less positive portrayal.
