My ex-roomie sent the following email, I’m putting it in IMHO because I know there are some people out there who are still thinking about voting for the yahoo.
I’ve read some of these same quotes before, but they were attributed to Dan Quayle at the time.
Just found them at http://www.snopes.com.
These have been attributed to Quayle in the past.
Ok, and somehow I screwed up the link and can’t get it for the page of Quayle Quotes. Go to the home page, click on Quotes, then scroll down till you see the quote credited to Dan Quayle.
These quotes are nearly all made up, as Crunchy Frog has pointed out, but . . .
I bet if most people, including about 98% of the SDMB population, were to have about 30-60 minutes of their speech tape-recorded, then transcribed, they would be aghast at how idiotic they sounded. When people speak, there are inevitable verbal pauses, subject changes, unfinished sentences, mid-sentence topic changes and other phenomena that tend to look and scan funny when printed.
pldennison, you have no idea. I used to tap phones when I served in the Air Force. On the conversastions that had bits of info we wanted, we would have to transcribe them word-for-word: every er, uh, um, every stutter, every cough. You have no idea how stupid some of these sentences sounded when taken away from the main body of the text. In fact, it was kind of a game for us to relieve the boredom of transcribing conversations to find a sentence that taken out of context was absoluetly hysterical.
Don’t get me wrong about any of this. I’m not defending Bush, in fact I’m not voting for him either. I just remembered seeing those quotes before.
Some of these quotes are indeed George W Bush; others are Dan Quayle.
For a site that documents source and date and time and occasion of W verbal flubs, go here http://slate.msn.com/Features/bushisms/bushisms.asp .
Some of the quotes listed above may or may not be completely made up. Some are definitely things said by Dan Quayle: I’ve have actual QuickTime video footage of him stating that he has made good decisions in the past and has made good decisions in the future. (I also have him stating that the question is “whether we are going to go forward to the future or past to the back” ).
This same list circulated on the internet a while back with the quotes being attributed to Gore.
I got it from one of my fundie cousins.
Unfortunately, people tend to believe things that they read, and that has carried over to things that they read off their monitors.
It was crap when it was directed against Gore, and it’s still crap.
BTW, I’m not voting for Bush. But couldn’t we stick to slapping him (and Gore) around on the issues?
In fact, I’d pay good money to give both of them a good whack up side the head.
Yeah, some of the quotes attributed to Bush are hilarious. But I’ll probably still vote for him.
I’m hoping for an oligarchy by his cabinet, which hopefully his dad will help him appoint.
I know it’s nitpicking, but George W. is not a Jr. as claimed in the OP.
Yeah, why bother calling him “Junior” when it’s so much more fun to call him “Dubya”?
That latter’s more fun to say.
Did anyone see the Doonesbury comic in the Sunday paper a couple of months ago where there was a warehouse full of Dubya quotes that were awaiting use in the strip? They were making fun, saying they were coming in too fast to use them up, so they had to store some of them away.
I don’t know if any of those were really from him or not, but you have to admit he’s done some stupid things. Like calling that guy an asshole with his microphone on and for crying out loud it’s “subliminal” not “subliminable”
Oh my goodness, ROTFLMAO!!
Let’s pray this does NOT happen with our freak of the week daddy’s boy Bush.
BTW, once I happened to pick up the phone just as the machine switched on, so I overheard an entire conversation I had with my friend. It was awful! I never realized I talked like that! I’ve been working on it ever since.
Hey! I’ll have you know that “subliminable” is a perfectly frompulent word.
Cromulent, my dear Crunchy Frog, cromulent…
Cromulent/frompulent, potato/potatoe.
Whatever.
It’s really bizarre, when you think about it. Dubya has come up with enough dumb quotes to fill several pages (“I have a record, a record which is conservative and compassionated!”). Why make up any?? Same deal with the tripe about domestic violence going up during the Super Bowl, which Cecil covered (don’t remember which column, sorry).
And very indigenous to our paperclips.
Sadly, reports are coming in today that The Goober now has 235 EVs in his pocket. Unless almost all of the States that are still sitting on the fence fall into Gore’s yard, I suspect I’ll be crawling under a rock for the next four years.
And no, not the same rock from which I initially crawled out from.
Crunchy Frog, the finer elements of speech just don’t resignate with some people.
