The fun part would be watching officers ask, “For what?” He can order whatever he wants, and a cheeseburger, too. Doesn’t matter of there’s no legal justification for it.
I’m hoping that the election results can lead more Republican moderates to have the courage to actually go back to their constituents and say, "Yo, look at the scoreboard! We ain’t winning. We’re gonna keep losing if we double down on this nonsense." There’s an opportunity for some real good right now. The Joe Bidens of the world could actually work with the Susan Collins’ and Ben Sasses of the world and occasionally get something done.
I firmly believe that Biden will have to be a pretty progressive president for Democrats to matter in the future. They cannot confuse straight bipartisanship with centrism for centrism’s sake. They will have to get some liberal shit done, but they will have to pick and choose what gets done. If a $15 minimum wage gets done, that probably means healthcare for all or expanded welfare benefits don’t get done. We have to pick the things that matter and AOC and company will have to roll with it.
And assuming these results hold up – let’s all have a moment of sympathy for Chuck Schumer. He who holds the reigns will be held accountable for the results, yet he will have almost no ability to move Democratic priorities through the Senate. He’ll be able to get nominees through, and can use budget reconciliation to get some stuff done, but with the filibuster he’d need ten Republicans to move any legislation. There just aren’t that many votes left in the Republican “Sanity Caucus.”
And, Chuck’s up for reelection in 2022, with progressives already aiming for him in the primary. The Senate’s failure to advance progressive priorities while he’s “in charge” will be Exhibit 1 in their argument.
The weird thing is, they did it wrong. You want to make someone’s nose more Jewish, you enlarge the bridge of the nose, give it a bit of a hook. Instead, they made the tip bigger, which really doesn’t accomplish anything. I swear to God, Goebbels must be spinning in his grave.
Not to mention that here in Georgia these sort of unsubstantiated bullshit accusations by a candidate running one of the most openly racist campaigns I’ve ever seen most definitely helped get out the vote for Warnock. As someone said on Twitter, she pissed off the black church.
I don’t think it would that precedent-breaking to restore the actual filibuster instead of the threatened filibuster. How often will filibusters actually tag-team talking on the senate floor to prevent a vote?
If you think that Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, et. al. would blanche at being “forced” to pontificate at length on why they’re filibustering progressive legislation, you haven’t been paying attention.
I think they should combine the two filibuster systems.
The point of getting rid of the need to filibuster on the floor was to keep filibusters from stopping all business of the senate.
This of course meant that a filibuster became something easy to implement.
I think that they could just allow someone to hold up a single bill by doing a standing filibuster, but also proceed with the business of the senate, leaving the filibustering senator out of any proceedings or votes.
I’ve been seeing ads for weeks, claiming that Warnock is a socialist (which, in Republican-speak, means “someone I don’t like”), that Pelosi plans to replace Biden with Harris, and, that old tried-and-true chestnut, Democrats are coming for your guns. Seriously, the GOP is completely untied to reality, any more.
I’ve avoided reading and posting to this thread, since reading about the Republicans was enraging me without relief - I was literally shaking with anger yesterday after Trump’s lies at the rally in Dalton - but I’m amazed and glad that I have at least one and possibly two new Democratic senators to represent me.
I’m also glad the flood of texts, phone calls, emails, and letters will finally end.
Good. Whether we’re talking progressive or centrist, Schumer, Pelosi et al are just far too weak. The shitshow of recent years has been 80% shameless and unprincipled republicans, but also 20% weak democrats hoping to reach across the aisle and trying to be respectful regarding the alternative views on whether the emperor is clothed.
I actually like Schumer as a person, and I think he did toughen up over Trump’s term, but I still think we need someone better at holding republicans to account and stopping the dirty tricks, be that a centrist or a progressive.
