My MIL has been very unwell with cancer recently and the family wants to make this Christmas extra special for her.
When she was child each family member used to recite a poem on Christmas Eve. We are planning to surprise her by each doing a poem for her.
My problems are as follows
-
I don’t speak/understand German
-
I don’t know any German poems let alone Christmas related stuff
-
I’d like to not make the experience painful for my MIL by reciting a favourite poem really badly.
Can anyone help me out by suggesting a poem, website to look up?
If all else fails I’m going to put leechboys fav. passage from Hamlet through bable fish and see what happens.
Stoopid me forgot to tell you that my MIL is German and lived in Germany until she was a teenager - hence the reason the poems need to be in German.
stoopid pregnant brain forgetting stuff
leechbabe found this one by Googling Weihnachts-Gedichte. Have fun.

I’d help you with phonetic pronounciation, but I’m pressed for time. Maybe one of our other German dopers can kick in and help, although they are probably asleep right now. Good luck!

Thanks Quasi.
I’m off to translate it to english so at least I know what I’m reciting
Here’s a page of carols Weihnachtslieder and the music too. I’d help with pronunciation, but it might be better to get an Aussie to do that.
And if you’re going to quote Hamlet, it’s much better in the original German, of course. (I’m not entirely joking; there’s a good chance your MIL would recognize it if it’s a famous passage.)
