It’s Moanday, and back to work for us non-RDOSes, but let’s not lose our heads.
You’re hotter than me, it’s only 73 degrees Ferret Height(22 Centipedes) here. But the Heat Index is 82.

First! Woot!
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 21c/71f with a predicted high of 25c/78f and cloudy. Weather app says “This is the fucking perfect day to stay inside and try a new hobby. I fucking suggest witchcraft.” Well, I would but we are going home today so we have to go outside.
Yesterday evening ended well, we had good Thai food and then went to a bar for a beer and an apple jenever, met two lovely dogs, and chatted with a guy who is coming to the UK soon for the world beard championships. Who knew there was such a thing? He has been world champion before so I hope he does well.
Today’s plan after we check out of the hotel is pizza at our favourite restaurant near the station, train to Brussels, Eurostar to London and a train back to the midlands. Should still have my head at the end of all that!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 93 and sunny. Quality cee-mint pond time and other RDOD slothage is the plan for the day. Sup with be grilled chikin strips, sallit and cheesey garlic bread. Easy and a tasty meal for a hot day.
doggio that explains why I woke up with the urge to storm a prison.
BooFae safe travels home!
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Moanday Y’all!
Mornin’ all! About 0630 and sunrise as I start to dribble. Yep dribble. It’s going to be one of those wet gray days. Isn’t actively raining now, but everything is wet and the temp’s a relatively cold 76/24. Brrr! NWS is cheerfully predicting showers & T-storms much of the day w lots of 1-2"/3-5cm rainfall, and some areas with double or maaybe triple that. Mild street flooding is expected in the usual suspects locales.
Which dampens (heh) my morale, douses any thought of a carwash, drowns my interest in biking or beaching, and leaves me with damned little to do when stuck alone. Seems like a great day for more indoor … sports.
From last week:
Cool! I noticed Machias on the map but picked nearby Whiting as my representative last-place-in-the-US. It isn’t quite, but it’s close. Sorta like Flyboy’s town.
So yeah, you get the lived-two-corners award as well.
A good friend of mine has a cabin on one of the many islands just off Freeport. He & wifey spend a bunch of each summer up / out there. I’ve been once and the nothingness there is really pretty. And the furriners locals talk real funny. Good times.
From upthread:
Boofae: But what about the guy’s beard?!?! Enquiring minds want to know! And yes, safe travels. But only after a fresh yummy pizza.
Swampy: You sure know how to play this game. Always with the good eats and the easy livin’. I might get to be you once I grow up but that’ll take work, and I’m an RDOS to my newly minted RDOSsy core.
Other than that, nada mas here at CasaLSL’s outpost in one corner of the country. Onward into the meaty part of the week. Cheers!
By coincidence, we happened to be in Paris this past weekend. Lots of space blocked off in the center of the city in preparation for today’s festivities.
And in true Parisian fashion, the locals we talked to were annoyed by the disruptions and the influx of celebrants, rather than feeling patriotic about the meaning behind the event.
Regarding shower squeegies (from the last MMP), stand near your fainting couch and grasp your pearls - I don’t use one. I rinse the soap off the doors with the hand-held shower gizzie and I just don’t care about spots. Nor do I care about water spots on my drinking glasses or my windows or my car. I’ll pause while you judge me imperiously.
We’re doing some scenic cruising but, frankly, it’s all mountains and icebergs and after a while, one becomes jaded. At least as far as photograhy goes. Plus it’s cold out there.
Tonight is our dinner at the Italian restaurant on board. I looked over the menu and I’m not sure what I’ll order as most of the dishes include some ingredient that I really don’t much like (anchovies?? ick!!) I’ll figure something out before we go.
We figured out why it’s so hard to find a quiet place to just sit - there are 5 or 6 specialty dining rooms that occupy space where, on other ships, one would find lounges with comfy chairs and minimal noise.
Yesterday, FCD got a theaterful of laughs. We were at the presentation about shipwrecks, and when talking about an old sailing ship that went down near England, the presenter mentioned it had a small dog aboard. He asked why they would have a small dog, and FCD called out “Because a big one wouldn’t fit!”
The answer, of course, is vermin control - a little terrier ratter.
Today’s ship-related talk is “Why the British don’t speak Spanish” - I’m guessing it’ll be about the Armada - ya think? I also plan to attend the talk on Viking mythology and another about the ports we’ll be visiting the next 2 days. Tonight’s entertainment is a guy doing the Billy Joel songbook, so that might be worth checking out.
So, Happy Moanday, and let us eat cake!!
This is the no judging zone.
I’ve certainly had showers with glass doors over the years. And squeegees. Which got at best sporadic use from late wife and I. Ref someone’s comment about me and efficiency last week … I fail to see how spending 2 minutes squeegeeing every day, plus 5 minutes cleaning at the end of the week is better than spending 6 minutes cleaning at the end of the week. Especially if the housekeeper is the one spending the 5 or 6 minutes and wife or I are the ones squeegeeing.
The larger issue for me is that the instant the hot water cuts off, I start getting chilled to the bone. Any time spent dripping wet while fucking with a squeegee utterly ruins the shower experience. It’s a race to get dried off before my core is colder after a nice hot shower than it was before I started.
The show is this coming Saturday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. I’m not sure how big, really, there are something like 4 live bands providing entertainment, lots of food vendors, and craft vendors, too. It’s all downtown here. Normally it’s on the square downtown, but they’re remodeling the square so it’s going to be about a block away from where it usually is. I participated two years ago and it was fun, but we end up leaving early because it was getting ready to pour on us and you know, we would have melted!
I just looked it up. There’s 5 bands, 16 artists (so far - she’s announcing them daily), and 5 food vendors.
Today is probably going to be a slow day. I’m still working on forks here and there and I have an appointment at 1. In between I’ll just be observing MusicMan and what he decides. He has a cousin that he’s very close to who is in the hospital. He’s spoken with his aunt this morning and is contemplating going up north to spend time helping her the rest of this week when his cousins gets out of the hospital. I completely support his decision whatever he does. I then have to figure out the logistics for myself and whether he’ll be attending my show. I do have a plan, though. I purchased a 9ft patio umbrella (conveniently purple and with LED lights) to take along instead of my usual tent in case I am alone. There are other things in place, so we shall see.
Good morning, everyone.
It’s 64°F and clear outside. Our expected high will only be 74°F, with a mixture of sun and clouds later in the day. I’m good with the lower temp; it reached 92F yesterday and was uncomfortable. Tomorrow, the temps climb right back up to near 90°F, with abundant sunshine.
All that being said, it was still very warm downstairs this morning. The pups have abandoned me and gone back upstairs to be in the air-conditioned bedroom with my husband. Honestly, I think Buster would probably hang out here, but I shut the door, so they can’t get out, and so I’m not overworking the AC unit.
Shower squeegees; I bought one when we first moved into the house and used it religiously, however, my husband did not. Over time, it just disappeared. I never replaced it. Instead, I have a small bowl I fill with water and rinse off the door after showering, but again, I’m the only one who does it. It’s a losing battle. My showerhead is stationary, so I can’t lift it to rinse or spray.
FCM, I love Norse mythology. It’s pretty interesting.
I have to go to the vet today to pick up the food he recommended for the pups. I hope it helps address the itchies. Their current food is supposed to do that, but it hasn’t helped.
I did laundry yesterday, so I’m not sure what’s on the agenda today. Perhaps some pruning in preparation for the roofers next week. I have three arborvitae that are impinging on the gutters, so I need to cut them back or down. I would prefer just to cut them down, to be honest. They are huge fire hazards and should not be up against a house. Somehow, they went from cute little three-foot-tall shrubs to these monsters in no time. The developer planted them before we moved in 22 years ago.
I also need to trim up the neighbor’s maple tree branches that have now reached my gutters, and while I’m at it, I want to trim up his stupid ginormous juniper tree that also hangs over my driveway and side yard. It would be nice to hire someone to do it and have them take away the trimmings, but 1) I’m not sure it could be done this week, and 2) it would probably be pretty damn expensive.
The Stellar Jays and the crows are squawking and screeching, so something has upset them. Not sure what, but the jays are a noisy bunch who seem easily annoyed.
Alrighty, I need to get some more coffee and get on with the day. You all take care!
I got the temperature off of The Weather Channel website. I went outside, and it was cooler outside than inside of the house. So it felt hotter because I was inside! TWC’s website is reporting 63º now.
My showerhead is stationary, so I can’t lift it to rinse or spray.
Changing out your shower head is super easy. We changed ours out when we moved into this 1980’s home with no special tools or adapters needed. (We had them at our last place too, but it was newer.) Look it up on you-tube and then do it yourself. You will never look back!
There’s 5 bands, 16 artists (so far - she’s announcing them daily), and 5 food vendors.
That sounds like so much fun, will your mom be helping so you both have a chance to look around?
I’m sorry about MM’s cousin, I hope he recovers well.
Mild street flooding is expected in the usual
suspectslocales.
Is your town as flat as Phx? I used to know someone who worked flood control and it is much more complicated than I had imagined. And I can imagine a whole lot of complications when it comes to moving water. I hope you find some way to entertain yourself!
So the day started early for me, Jolene finally caught her tail and gave it a good bite. It bit back and she ended up having a screaming, hissing, fur flying fight with it while I was trying to hide under the covers.
So now I’m up and showered, the fur covered comforter is in the washing machine and the fuzzbutts are curled up together for their morning nap.
No plans for today except getting my new glasses. According to the tracking, they are on the truck now. I’ll be so happy to be able to go back to my 24 (threads per inch) count project. The 18 count one I’m doing now is pretty and all, but the 24 count one has funner threads.
Yesterday I bought a bunch of hand-painted wood puzzles thinking that mom would enjoy them. They come in sheets so I’ll probably separate them and take a little file to the rough edges before sending them to her. She gets tired easily now and that is the tedious part anyhow.
My coffee needs refilled so off into the day I go. Have a great week everyone.
Happy birthday to Jerry Rubin.
Is your town as flat as Phx? I used to know someone who worked flood control and it is much more complicated than I had imagined.
The southern half of Florida is larger than all of WV. And its highest elevation other than levees is 15 feet above sea level. Yeah, it’s flat. Very, very flat. Here near the ocean, so all of greater Miami, an area ~20 x ~120 miles in size, the variation is more like zero to 10 feet.
Much of the total metroblob is built on filled-in swamp. Which filling was done over ~100 years with varying degrees of diligence. And hence varying elevation and subsidence. There are whole neighborhoods or square miles that are 12-18 inches lower than the surrounding areas. Which very predictably fill with water to that depth as they act as the catch basins for the other slightly higher adjoining neighborhoods / miles.
Sure, there are massive flood control and pumping systems designed to mostly deal with our historical levels of rainfall. But a sustained deluge will max out that draining capacity, then the excess simply flows over the land in response to gravity.
We don’t have disasters, but we do have messes. So far. AGW has not yet had its way with us here.
The first time a storm like Harvey parks over Miami instead of Houston, it’ll be very interesting to see what the aftermath looks like. Very expen$ive too.
Good morning all. Slept uninterrupted by my bladder until 7:15am so should be in good shape for the day. Shopping and a Jersey Mike’s sammich will be the major morning activities, the afternoon will be a ‘we’ll see’ day. Heading to 93F with a 1-in-7 chance of rain, so a good time to be indoors.
Not losing my head, but chopper is another name for a helicopter, and it made me think about how many times I have been on a helicopter flight. At least 5 that I can recall off the top of my head, all but one sight-seeing, and no crashes yet. I am also aware that chopper is a term for motocycles but strangeIy have never ridden on one of them.
boo fae, safe trip home. Hope the cats aren’t offended that you were on such close proximity to canines…
Pilot, stay dry. At least externally…
FCM, I know a bit about what you mean about sensory overload. Seeing something for the first time is awesome, the second time is great, the third time is…again? Have had the experience too. And yeah, my ship had one lounge designated ‘Adults Only’ for some quiet and it was always very crowded.
Sticky Buns, hope the show is fun, sure sounds like it will be.
FCM, I love Norse mythology. It’s pretty interesting.
I fear that most of my knowledge of Norse mythology comes from certain Marvel Movies…
JtC, had a nice Moanday morning laugh at Jolene and the caught tail…thank you.
Pilot, I knew Southern Florida was flat, but never quite in that detail. Yeah, a big hurricane overhead would be a very bad day indeed.
And time for the morning banana, install my hearing aids, and be about the day. Have a good one all.
i bedroom puttered instead of kitchen putter, thus forgetting to bring in the marmalade and maple syrup. le sigh. ended up getting an almond croissant for breakies. that works for bastille day.
tomorrow will be a french toast day at green eggs cafe. already drooling.
fish are jumping and bears are eating at katmai. the early bears are getting quite the tummy full.
it is hot and humid in philly. there may be storms later today.
on to monday things.
I’m having gyros for dinner instead of escargot and crepes. I’m not very French.
Yesterday was a day from somewhere. Sundays I refill my weekly pill container and could not find my Toporol. Toporol regulates my heart beat and is kinda important. There are only 2 places the bottle lives. My purse or the dining room table. It was nowhere to be found. I went to urgent care and they couldn’t help since I wasn’t having symptoms but they told me to page my cardiologist which I did. Talked to the NP who sent a new rx to the pharmacy. I have no idea where the original bottle is. I fear I may have thrown it away in a fit of cleaning.
Then I went to the barn and spent 2 hours amongst my people which reset my body to its normal level of anxiety…
Crazy morning so far. I live in an apartment building at an intersection that looks out on the freeway through the city. There’s a street that goes over the freeway and then an on-ramp right off the intersection, if you see what I’m saying. There’s a normal intersection and then a part that veers off down and left toward the freeway. It is accident central. I’ve been here for less than a year and I’ve heard or seen no fewer than five. Today’s was a lu-lu.
It’s not even 7am yet. I’m sitting here drinking coffee and … BANG - BANG - BANG. At first I thought it might be shotgun blasts. I went to my balcony and saw a white pickup truck on it’s side facing the wrong way at the entrance to the on-ramp. Holy shit, I says to myself. I grabbed my phone and called 911, and by the time I got through there was someone already on the scene helping out. I gave as much info as I could but I couldn’t see everything for the tree right in front of my balcony too. I didn’t even know there was another car involved.
The 911 operator told me other calls had come in from the same incident so I hung up and when I heard someone say he could use some water, I filled a jug up and ran down. That’s when I saw the other car, a little sedan with every airbag deployed, sitting in the middle of the intersection. The guy who needed the water was the sedan driver and there was still someone in the truck. Just as I got there the firetrucks started rolling in (incidentally, it was probably less that five minutes between accident and emergency crews arriving - pretty good) so I got the fuck out of the way.
Back up on the balcony I saw them working on the windshield of the pick-up to extricate that person. I was selfishly videoing it from on my balcony and I was really afraid of what they might drag out of there, but sonofabitch if this young woman doesn’t crawl out, get on her feet and literally stroll away from the wreck with a smile on her face. She was sitting down talking to the EMT’s still smiling. Weird.
So, it doesn’t look anyone was seriously hurt but damn if that wasn’t a little eye-opener on my day off.
Exciting morning for sure. Yowza!
Modern cars are amazingly crash-worthy. Between crumple zones, autobrakes, seatbelts, and airbags, the car commits suicide to keep the occupants almost unharmed in crashes that would have been fatal in 1970s cars. That’s also why modern cars tend to get totaled more readily than '70s cars. More damage to more, and more expensive, parts.
Glad everyone seems to be in one piece in your neighborhood.
ended up getting an almond croissant for breakies. that works for bastille day.
tomorrow will be a french toast day at green eggs cafe. already drooling.
Thanks for that. I was casting about for where to eat breakfast and now I know for sure. One of the French-style cafés nearby.
At least that’s the plan if I can quit fiddling here, then shevel and go before they start serving dinner.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, a load of laundry ready for the dryer and fixing to do KP. Today’s agenda is a call to one of my financial institutions and setting tour appointments for Sis.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Low volume day agin, but I got out at the usual time. I did my Aldi run, no wit’s naptime.
And in true Parisian fashion, the locals we talked to were annoyed by the disruptions and the influx of celebrants, rather than feeling patriotic about the meaning behind the event.
Did you ask them if they were hoping for cake?
Who knew there was such a thing?
Does the winner get a trophy made of empty IPA cans?
I’ll pause while you judge me imperiously.
< puts FCM on The List >
I squeegee my clear shower curtain.
So, it doesn’t look anyone was seriously hurt but damn if that wasn’t a little eye-opener on my day off.
Indeed.
