It’s beautifully cloudy and cool right now. I want to absorb the chill through my pores for when it hits the 90’s Wednesday.
Had a long talk with my DIL last night. She was a trained tax preparer and is smart as a whip. I’d have called her before, but she works long hours, and they’re in the process of moving. She gave me lots of good info, said no, the IRS won’t just take money from my accounts with no warning whatsoever, and told me it’ll be a long process and to take a Zen approach. That was a help. So now instead of feeling like I got hit by a bus driven by supervillains and am dying on the roadway, I feel like I got hit by a Vespa and have a broken leg that’ll require months of PT.
I absolutely cried after each of my kids went off to college. I was proud. I was thrilled. But I also LIKED having them around and was going to miss them dearly. I think it hits us in a different way at different times.
wordy, hope overlyboy loves cross-country. I so admire those XC kids! I think one of the great things about a sport or activity is that it gives kids a sense of belonging. It’s like moving to a big city but living in a friendly neighborhood.
MetalMouse, hope you remembered your shopping bag! I keep a couple stashed in my purse, but I guess that wouldn’t work for you. I hope the library is open…and quiet. I miss the days when libraries had a cathedral hush.
BooFae, so the forecast stopped the funny snark?
Moooooom, hope the zoo is a blast! I bet half the fun will be watching the RoxStar’s delight. Will Tobias have a special nickname, too? I guess that’s Toby announced.
Yikes. I have a feeling there’s a rough story behind that. Glad you came through it.
flyboy, that’s molti soldi per una piccola quantitá. (You can see how rusty my Italian is.) The cat shelves sound wonderful! I bet Goo appreciates them. (Two blinks mean “Thank you,” I believe.)
I forgot it…but ALMOST remembered it. Got the stuff, but Jersey Mike’s was closed for remodeling, so ended up at JJ’s for the Moanday sammich.
The library is open but requires masks, so I’ll probably print out all the info I have and head on down there 2sday and Hump Day. Still pretty quite, with the kids back in school it’s likely to stay that way.
FCM, don’t melt; is ice cream available?
VanGo, I still have an old push mower sitting in my garage, haven’t used it in 3 years but don’t know where to dump it…
Flyboy, sure the cats were impressed with Clover… Good on ya for taking her home. And $150 for dinner for two…don’t think I’ve ever paid that much for a meal in my life.
OK, back to…whatever it was I was doing. All y’all take care.
Got an estimate too overhaul my late-'70s Sub. $2,040. I called Ben Bridge Jewellers to tel them never mind. The woman I talked to had a heavy Asian accent, so I was having trouble understanding her. She said the overhaul would be $1,100, which was more in line with what I was expecting. She said Rolex said my clasp is stretched, so I need a new bracelet… for $900.
I don’t need a new bracelet. The one I have works fine. She’s going to contact Rolex to see if they’ll to the overhaul without replacing the bracelet. If they will, I’ll get the overhaul. If not, I’ll put a James Bond nylon strap on it and have them do it. If they won’t do that… Oh, well.
I’ll admit, I had a moment of “how are there no new MMP posts?!?!?!?!” before remembering that it’s Monday and a new one started.
At 3pm-ish it’s 89 degrees here and a touch humid (“feels like 94”), with a chance of thunderstorms around dinnertime. The predictive radar makes it look like this evening’s storm will miss me, but you really never know around here. I don’t know why I even bothered looking at the radar, honestly. Not like I’m going’ anywhere.
In other news, what the hell was I thinking when I volunteered to help with this proposal?!? I know what goes into writing/leading a section, but somehow I completely underestimated how much time my “day job” takes. And the proposal manager is having us complete the final draft by this coming Sunday, even though the customer hasn’t given us a due date yet. Grrr.
(I’m employed and I get to sit on my ass in air conditioning all day, so I know it’s a little gauche to complain. Things could definitely be worse. But I recognize this particular type of stress, and it is exactly what I deliberately left behind 1.5 years ago… {sigh})
Many moons ago I worked in a building where the elevators were made by Schindler, with their logo in the metal plate that the doors would close over (so I saw it every time I used an elevator). I would always amuse myself by thinking “Schindler’s lift…heh heh heh.”
Good luck!
Someday I’ll get myself a Rolex. Not a fancy one with diamonds or anything; probably a Lady-Datejust similar to this one. It’s not high on my list of things to spend that much money on (vs, say, travel), but it’s been on my bucket list for a while. I might actually make “buy a Rolex” my Big Reward for hitting my goal weight (1-2 years from whenever I have surgery).
Afternoon, all. Today was the Official First Day Back At School. Kids arrive Thursday. The District managed to drive everybody crazy with a 95 minute video of all the people in the district who are new or who have hit seniority milestones. I left 3 minutes into it and went to work in my classroom. So did a number of others, it seems. They should have learned by now that nobody ever listens to those things!
Classes look like an interesting balance of kids. I can check their schedules online, so I look for both kids with discipline problems in the past as well as kids taking 3+ AP classes as seniors. I have plenty of both, so it ought to be a fun year!
I like non-dressy (functional) watches. I bought my GMT Master II, with the black-and-red bezel, new in 2001. I did get a Jubilee bracelet for it, but I still have the original Oyster bracelet. I got the '70s-vintage Submariner about a dozen years ago. I had it overhauled over a decade ago for $800. It’s a non-date, so it’s very plain – just the way I like it.
Good luck on getting a Rolex. New GMT IIs cost about two and a half times what I paid for mine new. The Sub was $1,700 when I got it, and a local shop said it was worth $4,500 a few years ago. I checked eBay listings a while back, and ones similar to mind sold for $7,000 to $10,000. I think bargains may still be out there, but day-um!
It depends on whether someone here gets inspired. EmilyG came up with RoxStar. Not sure what one can do with Tobias or Toby. Big T???
Home at last - between road construction and traffic, it was a gawd-awful drive home taking way too long. I had some cereal and some yogurt for supper and I’m going to hop in the shower shortly because I feel all sticky and icky.
The zoo was nice - not very crowded, and we went to a couple of areas that we skipped last time. But towards the end, Roxy was really tired and really cranky, and she had a bit of a tantrum till her mama gave her the phone connected to YouTube. And, of course, she fell asleep in the car, about 5 minutes before we got home. Daughter is taking her to their neighborhood pool when they get home.
Meanwhile, I’m beat. Shower, then chillage for sure.
As well you should be. Congratulations on the success of your hard work!
Hope he enjoys college as much as my kids did. Ah, the joys of the mind….
[there was no sarcasm there]
The hugs will be all the sweeter when he’s home for visits. Still works for me and mine and the last graduation ceremony was 4 years ago. His Lego is still in my basement.
I’m getting ready to leave to pick up Polar in just a few minutes. The x-ray did not show anything in the lungs, which is good news. However, the growth in his anal sack has grown; but the growth is still under 2 centimeters so we can still proceed with the surgery.
I’m not really looking forward to having to wipe his backside after surgery and he won’t like it either, but we’ll have to keep that area clean. He’s going to get lots of treats during that time just so I can do a good, but gentle cleaning.
I’m glad the zoo was nice, FCM.
Ninety-threes minutes of introducing new staff and announcing career milestones?! I would have left too.
Howdy Y’all! A day of total and complete sloth ensued today. i said I’d go over to the church house to check for drips but I did not leave da cave all day. Just. Couldn’t. We had some quality cee-mint pond time, achieved nappage and sup got oooked and et.
Nettie happy Doperversary! I saw the slice of cake by your name.
Everyone else, comprehension is next to nil today, so yays, boos, hugs, trouts, noogies, chitlin’s and how you doin’s all around as needed.
Enjoyed the family reunion, but am tired after the trip home. Saturday evening at Dad’s, Nelson began to raise cain at the back door. Sis and I were joking about there being a zombie or a chupacabra outside and Dad mentioned that there were coyotes in the area and that neighborhood cats weren’t hanging around outside anymore.
When we took the dogs out that night before bed (Sis brought Nelson’s auntie and his father), we discovered the remains of what we figured was a rabbit the next morning when we cleaned it up. Maybe there WAS a chupacabra!
It began raining when I rolled into Indianapolis today but wasn’t too bad until I got to Louisville. Then the heavens opened up. After driving 50 miles in it, I pulled into a rest stop to take a break from driving 45 mph in the slow lane where folks had slowed to that speed and the tractor trailers practically drowning my little car. I got drenched going in to the restroom and when I came back out, there were maybe three drops of rain. There was a little rain after that, but nothing like the downpour earlier.
And the hits keep coming. Mrs Magill is officially in remission! There was no trace of leukemia in her bone marrow. Next step is for her blood tests to come back and we will find out how many vaccinations she will have to retake.
Evening all. Went to Freddy’s Steakburgers for dinner, the lady on the speaker asked for my name and I said “David” in what I thought was a clear voice, and she got “Stephen” out of it. No idea how, but I was hungry so I became stephen for a few minutes.
Soccer is ramping up, I’ll start putting teams together tomorrow and we have a “Jamboree” scheduled for Saturday, so people are beginning to ask questions (the ones they should have asked two weeks ago). Going to ‘carrot and stick’ some of my coaches who have been lax on the training. (“That’s a nice team you have there…pity if something were to happen to it…”).
FCM, walking a zoo in summer heat will wear anybody down. Pleasant dreams.
red, been thru a few storms like that. Glad you made it safe.
taters, glad Polar is doing ok. But nobody gives me treats for wiping my backside…
quietly, that’s a lot of video for no purpose. Think you took the right option.
Oopsie, that’s life…you volunteer for something you think is simple and doing good, and it comes back to bite you like a rabid Rottweiler.
OK, no putting it off, need to write to my coaches. All y’all take care.
Up from nappage, and making burgers. I have a cat on my lap, and a dog snoring behind me.
Nah, Dad kept being transferred for work. But after not visiting the same house twice in 10 years:
Parents: “Why don’t you visit more often?”
Me: "I can’t find you. "
Congrats on the Doperversary, Nettie!
The Chupacabra ate the goat, the rabbit ate the Chupacabra, and Arthur offed the rabbit with The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.
yay summer freedom(sort of) is finally here ! no more getting woke up early or youtube being blasted all day (most of it I liked but when your 9 videos in an absolutely boring game…)and little snots being nosey on what I’m looking ta on the pc … and no more Dennys morning shift-home version every day …
He might not even be where during the week much either …
A neighbour from a couple of blocks away just broough over some cucumbers. I didn’t recognise her, as her hair was longer. That was really nice of her and her sister. They liked Mrs. L.A.'s ‘Wall Of Stuff’ (metal sculptures, buoys, etc.). Now I need to think of something to do with the cukes!
