"Ghost scrolling" after using touch screen scroll back

INE it has always jumped exactly 20 posts. You can watch the post #s decrement by 20s.

I can’t say whether it’s worse, better, or unchanged. I’ve mostly altered my habits to avoid provoking the bug.

I haven’t had a problem on my laptop. On my phone, the problem I describe in my previous post in this thread has gotten worse, and the site’s become unusable. I’ve just given up on Dope on my phone altogether. That was about, roughly, half of my Dope time. I guess I’ll check back on my phone every so often to see if the issue has been cleared up.

I’m using an Android phone.

The thread scrolling backwards is very frustrating.

I suspect it may be page size in the profile. But don’t know if there’s a fix.

So my coworker and I have noticed this with Teams on Windows 11 as well.

We will click on a link shared, it opens in a bowser and the chat feed takes us flying up the chat and we have to scroll back.

It just started a week or so ago.

I have noticed the auto-backward scrolling a few times (as @LSLGuy says, it seems to happen when scrolling back through long threads).

I have also noticed behavior similar to what @dirtball describes – not coming back to where I was on the page. Example: let’s say I’ve read up to post 50 in a thread. I come back to the thread later and it remembers where I was (the red line). I read through to, say, post 80 and there’s a link to a news article or youtube video or whatever. I click that link, and when I go back to the thread, sometimes I’m back at post 50. Sometimes I’m all the way down at the page footer.

If I’m on a forum page (not in a thread) and go away and come back, sometimes I’m about 20-30 thread titles down on the page from where I was.

I get this pretty much every time I follow a link and then return.

Also ref @needscoffee just above …

That’s why I always open those side links in a separate tab or window. On a PC that’s just Ctrl-click rather than plain click on the link. On a phone it’s press and hold the link and see what context menu pops up.

Then read the other tab or window to completion, close it, and you’re back on the SDMB tab you left.

I usually do too, but the point is that it shouldn’t be happening.

Agree it should not. It just happens that my natural way of multi-topic browsing rarely provokes that bug so I thought I’d share as a workaround.

Actually, it happens when I highlight the thing I want to look up (it’s not typically a hyperlink I’m doing a search on), click on “web search”, read the page, and click “back”. It never remembers my spot anymore. It used to.

Interesting. I have never used any sort of right-click web search browser feature. I’m wondering if that’s a Discourse issue or a browser issue?

Just now testing on my set-up, Win11 with Edge, the right-click "Search the web for ‘[highlighted whatever]’ " feature opens the search page in a separate tab. So I can’t even provoke the error you’re seeing.

Note I’m not suggesting you’re confused. “It works for me” is meant as a data point, not a refutation.

Sorry, I should have pointed out that this is on my phone.

Interesting. Thank you. Today I learned …

At your prompting I just discovered that Chrome on my Android phone has that feature: highlight some text then long-press to get a context menu which includes “Web search” as a choice. Which if tapped, opens the search results page in a separate tab whether I wanted that or not.
