Gilmore Girls

Please tell me there are other guys that like this. I talked to my best friend, who’s a girl, and she said it was too girly for her. Granted, she plays rugby at international level but still.

I don’t know what it is… or well, actually I do. The dialogue is quick and witty, but not so witty that it seems unreal. The characters are truly sympathetic and damnit if Lorelai Gilmore isn’t my absolute dream woman. I’m just mesmerized by her.

But… it is an incredibly girly show. I mean, it’s about the relationship between a single mother and her daughter (although single moms have never looked so good…). Man, I even find myself trying to chalk it up to Lauren Grahams good looks in an effort to pass it off as macho but it’s just not true. And Luke! What a dream-guy he is!

Oh god… anyway, any males actually watch this show?

I’m not a guy, but i do watch the show and I like it a lot. It is very quick-paced and a tad unreal, and it makes me laugh.

btw, read your posts in GD re Chile, the debate you had with adaher. I can only say: bravo.

I watch it when I can. I enjoy various things about it but mainly, it makes me laugh. It’s a far better show than some of the crap on TV these days. When I get to watch TV, that is.

If it makes you feel any better, I love the show. Not only that, I’ve turned other guys on to it. Back at Bragg, there’d be half a dozen guys in my barracks room to drink and watch Gilmore Girls.

Keep in mind these are Army soldiers in the Special Forces Qualification Course. I’m sure everyone liked it for their own reasons – mostly because Lorelai is so damn hott. But actually what got me hooked was the dialouge and writing.
I dont watch it particularly for the eye candy. My eye candy show is “What I like About You”.

Bear_Nenno, you made my day! Army Special Forces… believe you me that they will come up when I talk about Lorelai with my male friends, something I will dare to do now.

Elfje, thanks, didn’t really feel like it was constructive though. Depressingly, I find most debates to polarised about being much more about positioning then honest debate. I’m a bit naive and want to have honest discussions, I’m here to learn and form myself into a better person, not conform others to my beliefs at all costs (except on abortion… and homophobia… and maybe some other stuff… hrmm…)

Anyway, we should have a support group!

My 61 year old home-improving, flannel-wearing, retired-auto-engineer dad loves it. My sisters are amused by that, but when a show is that witty and well written, it has a much broader appeal than the target demographic.

Hrm… I just realised that I intended to post this in Cafe Society. An embarrasing faux pas, maybe a kind mod who happens to be passing by could give it a push in teh right direction.

Unless this turns out to be the appropriate forum for it (I don’t really know how the board works yet)

It promotes intelligence. Also, it’s a relief that, unlike any other American show/movie/sitcom where high school is involved, there’s nothing about “the cool crowd” (unless you count that sorority-type thing), jocks or cheerleaders, or the importance of good looks to get anywhere in society.

My girlfriend makes me watch it with her, but I don’t mind - the writing’s great and the show doesn’t seem particularly “girly” to me, the way soaps might. I enjoy it.

I like the show and I’m a guy.

I agree with *!ceQueen reasons.
Plus those chicks are hot!

I’m a guy, and I watch the show religiously. Never miss it.

Great dialogue, hot chicks (though I prefer Rory to Lorelai) and good drama. Not to mention the great indie rock soundtrack and references made by the characters; it’s obvious the creators really know their stuff.

I’d really like to read the thread but over here (Australia) they haven’t finished showing the third season, so I’m afraid of spoilers. Can anyone who has read the thread tell me if it’s spoiler free?

It is 100% spoiler-free.

I’m myself watching the series from the start right now, I’m at episode 18 of season 1. I don’t find neither Rory or Lorelai ‘hot’ in the standard sense of the word, as much as deeply sympathetic, interesting and mesmerising. Kind of the difference between being horny and being in love

Guy here. Watch when I can. Really enjoy the snappy repartee. And Lorelei’s jeans.

That is all.

Well not actually. I love the show because: 1) there was a passing reference to “the Manticore” a book by Canadian author Robertson Davies that I absolutely love (middle book of his Deptford Trilogy) - man, does Rory’s character read good books?; and 2) they use the song “Thirteen” by Big Star, one of the Greatest Bands Ever - see previously threads on them by gex gex (hey gex!) and myself…

Hey I like Robertson Davies too. I’ve read the Deptford trilogy, didn’t read the other trilogy though. Good stuff, a bit like a Canadian Gabriel Garcia.

And yes, Rory has good taste.

Man’s man, lady’s man, man about town here and I love watching the Gilmore Girls. In an ironic twist, I got my fifteen year old daughter watching it too. Ditto everyones enjoyment of the wit and alt. pop. culture comments as the reasons I watch it.

Stoneburg - Davies actually wrote three trilogies - the Salterton, the Deptford and the Cornish (and might’ve been on his way to his fourth with Murther & Walking Spirits and the Cunning Man, since they revolved around the same characters - but alas, he died). I assume you are referring to the Cornish - it is really great - as good as the Deptford, and the first book, The Rebel Angels is probably the best single book he wrote. Read it for Rory’s sake.

And now you have to get Big Star - if you like the Beatles circa Rubber Soul, this will be a good thing for you.

Enjoy.

Guy here… watched it last season when I had network television. I now have DirecTV w/o access to the BIG 5 (networks)

I like the fast talkin chiqs. Rory is pretty, Loralie is beatiful, and (grandma) is not so bad for a granny.

So, did Rory ever visit her dad?

Thanks!

Good Day, Good Sir!

Yeah, I think I might have mentioned it, but I have this show to thank for introducing me to Big Star (not to mention The Shins, Yo La Tengo and Sam Phillips). I mean, combine this musical taste with her appreciation for good literature and one almost wishes she was alive and living near me.

Uh… she being Rory.

40 year old guy checking in. I make it a point to watch this show whenever possible, for all the reasons stated above. It’s not that girly of a show. Great portrayal of a small community.
