Portmanteau turned up in today’s NYT crossword.

A portmanteau word, I learned today is a combination of two words to make a another word with a different meaning:

camcorder
smog
tangello
motel
liger
etc.

I knew about words like this, of course, but didn’t know what they were called.
And when I want to show off, I can use a lot of big words, like linoleum.
