Ginger or Mary Ann?

After the success of the Battlestar Galactica remake, I’ve occasionally wondered what other silly old shows could be given a modern spin. Someone could do a really dark version of Bewitched, for example.

Bailey was a knockout with the glasses.

Oh yeah, Bailey it is. Definitely a knockout.

Dawn Wells has a naturally dark complexion, so of course she tanned better than paler-skinned Tina Louise. Tina probably had to spend as little time in the sun as possible to avoid burning.

Bailey makes me drool, literally. I’d spend the whole workday just gazing at her behind her desk. :o

When I was a kid, it was Ginger all the way. But now, it’s Mary Ann.

What show did they appear on?

Or Lisa, Beth, or Catherine?

WKRP In Cincinatti

Mary Ann. Always preferred the girl-next-door look. Ginger tried too hard.

Also, pies. The way to my heart is definitely through my stomach.
As for Jennifer v. Bailey, that’s hard. I’d say Bailey, but I keep remembering that Jennifer went out with Les, and had a great time (as did Les). She always had a plus from me for that!

It was always Mary Ann for me. She was smart, nice, honest, and she could do stuff! She represented the woman that I (in elementary school) wanted to grow up to be. Ginger seemed false and manipulative.

I was disappointed with the theme song for the first season, where they referred to the Professor and Mary Ann as “the rest.” They dissed my favorite characters! Apparently I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. They changed it for (I think) the second season.

I wanted to marry the Professor . . .

They had to reshoot the opening because they were going from B&W to color. Bob Denver went to bat for them, insisting they be included in the credits. When the producers balked, he threatened to exercise his contractual rights and have his own credit moved to the end of the opening.

It was years later that news of this leaked out; neither Bob nor the producers ever mentioned it to anyone.

Sort of the other side of that for me: I identified most strongly with the Professor (I know, I know, I’m sure you’re all shocked to hear that), and so I was quite comfortable at all of the subtle romantic hints between the character I found most attractive and the one I identified with.

It was the French maid’s outfit in the “Jack-and-the-Beanstalk” dream that really did it for me! :o

I voted that I can’t choose, because I would choose them both. I have very distinct memories of watching Gilligan’s Island as a young kid and getting rather excited when I would see Ginger on the screen. As I grew older, I found that I thought Mary Ann was quite attractive as well. So now as a full fledged adult, if I had to choose, I would choose both and imagine me being the guy in the Skipper’s dream:

Me: I have an itch
Mary Ann and Ginger: Where is it?
Me: Wherever it pleases you to scratch.

What always got me is that the song just sounds worse with the old way, as three syllables isn’t enough to fill that space. Every other space has at least four, and it’s better to have more syllables towards the end. Instead, it just sounds like there’s this huge pause before the “Here on Gilligan’s Isle” line.

Thanks.

Sorry - never watched it!

I’ve seen enough references to “Bailey and Jennifer” to know that that’s what they’re from, but I’ve never watched it, either.

If we’re going with fantasies of both then the skipper’s real fantasy is:

A spoon full of crab
A spoon full of coconut

A spoon full of crab
A spoon full of coconut

We’ve discussed it: https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=10415255&postcount=59

No contest. Bailey had beauty and brains. I never thought of Jennifer, or Loni Anderson, as pretty let alone a knockout but rather as bearing a strong resemblance to an inflatable love doll.

In what way does that differ from the original series?
