Why does most of the giraffe boards consist of people obsessing and bitching about the SDMB? I am aware of the history between the 2 boards, but it seems like nearly every other thread over there is about this place. I know some people post on both sites and I would be interested in hearing in particular from those people.

It’s only one small part of the Gweeb. That’s not all we do. There are forums like on the Dope for general questions, opinions, debates, arts and entertainment. It’s really like the Dope with fewer rules. There’s even a pictures posting forum. You’re focusing too much on the snark.
I don’t think we’re allowed to post links, but it’s a message board hosted by Giraffe which is just an additional discussion board alongside, but not connected with the Straight Dope. It’s meant to complement the Dope, not compete with it.
But, maybe not compliment… 
All they do is complain about neck pain. It’s kind of boring, really.

Confirmation bias :). Much of the bitching is confined to one ( verrryyy long ) thread at any given moment of time. It seemingly sees a lot of traffic, but then a lot of the regular posters in it are ex-SDMB members that left over various annoyances or current SDMB-members that use it as a convenient place to freely vent frustrations on SDMB posters, posts or board culture that occasionally ( or in apparently some cases, constantly ) annoys them and in ways and language that this board might restrict. It’s a little obsessive and as such frankly every bit as mockable as some of the SDMB board cultural quirks :D. But it’s also contained and usually harmless. When it has escalated to ugly I’ve seen the administration step in and there is also a bit of self-policing.
Otherwise it is roughly similar to this place only smaller, more free-flowing, a lot more jokey, allows constrained picture-sharing and is much less heavily modded. The smaller and much more loosey-goosey nature of it is why I spend less time there ( that and there is only so much time in the day ), but a lot of folks prefer that kind of board environment.
Why are we just hearing about this now?
I slipped in there once by accident when I’d googled my username on a whim. It was a bit bizarre. For instance, they took my answer to a far-fetched hypothetical, treated it like a statement of daily method of operation, and then proceeded to get unbelievably nasty in response to their made-up person who they’d named after me. It was so far gone that I couldn’t even get upset about it. I read far enough to see that one poster pulled them up short when they started in on wishing harm on a child.
Another was going off about my appearance. Not something I put any time or thought into these days, I must admit. But why on earth should they care?!? :dubious:
Again, this is based on a tiny sample, I didn’t look around much after that, but it felt like an SDMB for the PIT crowd. A trolls SDMB.
When they formed the board, a bunch of people here very publicly announced they were leaving the Dope for that board, they kept hanging around posting “yup, I’m leaving, here I go.” There was a lot of drama, some of them were very upset about something.
Yup. We are allowed to post links, but the powers that be get grumpy (not unreasonably) when it’s linked to over and over in a thread. So…here’s a single link.
Nothing but a bunch of mouthbreathers over there. They even allow avatars.
Especially dumb ones like dogs wearing hats.
I once googled my username, and the single mention of me outside the SDMB was from a thread on the Giraffe boards, bitching about one of my SDMB posts, and how stupid it was.
At least they know my name! Which is more than the rest of the internet does. So now I love them.
Wait. Is this some variation of Stockholm syndrome?
It is pretty weird to have a whole other board for people to complain about a board they claim they don’t care about; it’s kind of like checking your ex-girlfriend’s horoscope.
…and hoping it says she’s going to have twins and maybe even find out who the father was.
If you have questions about another board, it’s best to have that discussion on that other board. I’m closing this thread.
