I was just browsing IMHO and MPSIMS and I want to say:
ENOUGH WITH THE FUCKING COUNTERPOINT THREADS, ALRIGHTY?
I was going to start up a thread called “My Dog Loves Thunder, someone help”, or “Do short distance relationships work?” or “Would you lose a 10% discount on everything for an extra finger?”, but I decided not to.
Nonetheless, the whole “Dad -> Mom fight” or “Girl Hooters -> Man Hooters” shit is pretty goddamn irritating. I mean, it’s virtually expected now, isn’t it, as evidenced by “YOU KNOWED THIS BE COMIN’ YALLS” prefixing every counterpoint bullshit arse thread.
Am I alone in thinking this? Even if I am I guess we could have some fun making up imaginary counterpoint threads. “My country is a shit place” or “Landline phone manners”. Oh ho I’m in tears of laughter already.
It’s times like this that I’m glad I stick mostly to Cafe Society. I have no idea what you’re talking about but judging from Aslan’s post, I’d hate it too.
::shrug:: Sometimes its’ best to hear both sides of the issue. In Cafe Society someone started a thread about annoying commericals. I could have ruined the hate-fest by posting about commericals I love, but I decided to start a new thread. As long as its informative and fun who is it hurting?
Having started one of the offending threads, and having even prefaced it with “You knew it was coming,” I have to say, fuck off chump. The cardinal rule is if you don’t like a thread, don’t read it. if you’re so horrified at the thought of a counterpoint thread, don’t open it. Obviously, since someone cared enough to start it and since a number of people cared enough to post to it, there is sufficient interest in the thread to justify it. If there weren’t the threads would sink to an early death. Oh, and did I mention fuck off chump?
This thread would make a lot more sense if the counterpointing threads merely aped the original and offered nothing more. None of the threads you’ve cited does this; they all examine a different aspect of a similar issue.
Did you have a problem with the real Point/Counterpoint segments on 60 Minutes back in the day?
It’s annoying when a good portion of the threads are like that, with male/female interchanged, but it’s not so much that the actual threads aren’t warranted. They may very well be. It’s annoying to see threads that can be prevented by asking about the concept and how you can aplly multiple ways of interpretating it. Like say, Male/Female/Duck wrestling, in one thread. The threads listed in the OP above are warranted I guess, but I don’t understand why people can’t start threads like “Male/Female hooters.”, instead.
You people ranting about “counterpoint” threads are a pip. These threads are almost a requirement of these boards.
Hypothetical: You go into a thread about fighting with your mother. You post a message about how you always fight with your father. The original poster comes back and says “Don’t highjack my thread! If you want to talk about fighting with your father go start your own thread!”
Seen this happen. So much in fact that people are now starting threads of their own right away rather than ever being asked.
So what’s your problem?
Or would you prefer every thread being highjacked by tangential posts?
What I don’t like is that frequently the extra thread is a blatant attempt to point out some prejudice/bias/shortcoming of the poster of the original thread. Some threads seem to be a valid, “Hey, it’d also be interesting to consider this from the flipside,” but others are just a snide commentary in titular form inflicted on people who are neither interested in the original nor its followup. You should take it up in the thread, where it belongs, IMHO, rather than creating a new thread that’s just a commentary on the old thread. The “if you don’t like it, don’t read it” argument doesn’t apply to thread titles, after all. Us non-psychics need to read thread titles.
