Give Texas back to Mexico -- yea or nay?

You’re expecting knowledge of history from someone who thinks the US “got” Texas from Mexico…know thy OP’s limitations…

Well given my recent frustrations in registering a car, trying to transfer my insurance policy and obtaining a Texas DL in the couple months I’ve been here I’m all for giving at least the state government to Mexico, or preferably a country we’re hostile too, like North Korea where they could do some good for the country.

But if we must give the whole state to Mexico I’m not worried as my drivers license still says I’m an Alaskan so I can get out easilly enough. jin if you want to move back to the US after the transfer you can marry me for your green card

Why do we hate Mexico enough to curse them with Texas?

We get to take fajitas with us.

For that matter, we get to take back Jennifer Love Hewitt (we don’t want her to act, we just want to look at her), Renee Zellwegger, and Steve Martin.

Sorry, ya’ll have to keep Dubya- we don’t want him.

I think Steve Martin and Renee Zellwegger can choose where they want to be. Luckily, Dubya and Hewitt aren’t that smart and will go.

Nothing would really change, most Mexicans are here anyway.

Man, losing a big Southern state is bad. But on the other hand, it is Texas. Maybe we can trade Texas for Cancun and a first round draft pick.

I was proposing just Texas as a sort of consolation prize. We get rid of some people who are still fighting the Civil War and some other people who are still fighting the Mexican-American War. It’s all gravy.
But Arizona. Whoa, I mean, are you insane? Give up the Grand Canyon? That’s worth having, man.
Now, as for giving Texas to Mexico, maybe we can soften the deal and ask them to take just half of Texas. Or maybe we could go to war again and force them to at least take Lubbock.

Now to those who have said “Don’t mess with Texas,” I’m afraid it’s too late. My great-granddaddy went down there for your first “Juneteenth,” and he helped mess up y’alls cotton-pickin’ plans – literally.

Maybe we could just give them back the disputed area. That’s all they wanted anyway.

As a bonus, that appears to include Lubbock.

Pssst… sorry to rain on everybody’s parade, but George W. Bush was born in Connecticut, and his dad was born in Massachusetts.
Dumping Texas wouldn’t accomplish a dang thing!

I must confess, though, I’m puzzled by the desire of liberals to be rid of us! After all, the Southern states they hate most TRIED to leave the U.S. on their own! After fighting a huge, bloody war to prevent that from happening, NOW you want to dump Texas?

MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!!! (“Darlings, you’ve gotta let us know… should we stay or should we go?”)

Okay, okay! They can have Connecticut, too!

So grandpappy was a carpetbagger. That’s nice. “Don’t Mess With Texas” is a highway anti-litter slogan. I guess we could expand it to include carpetbaggers. We still celebrate Juneteenth! It’s a popular celebration.

As for the Mexican-American war…Polk wanted California. The US had already annexed the nation of Texas. Sure, Mexico was pissed about losing Texas in a war a decade ealier, but to have the Pacific coast as part of the US was the true goal. The rest of the Southwest was needed for a transcontinental railroad…another of Polks goals. Polk was also trying to get the Oregon territory from Britain at about the same time, so he had to show that he wasn’t above fighting the Mexicans…a bluff he hoped would gain the Oregon territories without war with a much stronger (than Mexico) Britain.

So if “still fighting the Mexican-American war” means grabbing the current Southwest US from Mexico…well, we already have it. It was not a war about Texas, although Texas was part of it.

Still fighting the Civil war?? Only in Texas?? Yeah, right…the rest of the deep South is such a haven for racial equality, Texas must be all the worse.

So I don’t know who pissed in your Post Toasties, Andylisciuos, but Texas ain’t your problem.

I’d trade Texas for drive-thru attendants that can speak English.

All we’d have to do is hire Burns’ Directional Drilling Co. to pump all that oil out from under them. Like stealing candy from a baby.

My take on it is: Texas already considers itself an independent country. Why not make it official? None of this “give it to Mexico” stuff. The only caveat I would put in place is: Texans would not be allowed to drive outside of Texas.

Too late.

Texas was an independent republic. Big deal. Each of the 13 original colonies was also an independent republic. So was California. The only difference is that some Texans think it has some bearing on reality today.
I think the OP isn’t a bad idea. I lived in Laredo for a number of years. Eventually, I reached the limits of my Texan-tolerance and left. Truly, it is tiresome listening to them boast about the exploits of their ancestors. Try as I might, I could never get a one of them to grasp that no matter how much of a hero your great-grandaddy might have been, no particle of that glory attaches to you. The Texans have primitive screwheads beat all hollow when it comes to ancestor worship, I tells ya.

Jeeze,

What I still don’t understand these bad vibes about texicans. I think there is an inferiority complex going on. You don’t hear texicans trying to get rid of any other states. Well, except for the people republic of taxattuchetts, and that completely understandable, but we pretty much like everyone else.

Carpetbagger? No, suh! Great-granddaddy was a soldier! You see, when they lost the Civil War, them Texans decided they’d keep it a little secret from their slaves, just so the harvest could come in. The U.S. had to send some soldiers over that way to let Texans know that losing the war means losing the war.

My apologies. I didn’t mean to besmirch the admirable virtue and honor of your great-grandad.

The last Civil War battle in Texas was indeed 5 weeks earlier at Palmito Ranch, Texas. The last engagement of the Civil War was June 23rd with the surrender of General Stand Watie at Doaksville, Indian Territory. I guess Stand Watie hadn’t heard about Juneteenth.
