Glasses: Bold and funky or thin and stylish?

For many years I tried the “get the thinnest frames possible and hopefully nobody will notice the glasses” technique. I can’t get rimless glasses because my right lens is too thick, but I got varying kinds of wire frames. Unfortunately, the hope-nobody-will-notice technique generally doesn’t work.

For my current pair I decided to try the thicker-rimmed oval glasses that’re in style now, and the effect is much more flattering. I had been considering contacts, but I like these glasses so much I’ma keep wearing them. Besides, wearing glasses helps hide the dark circles that’re always under my eyes.

My precious! I wants them!

I’ve only needed glasses for a few years, so I’m still on my first frames. They are thin & wire-rimmed, and I hardly ever wear them because I think they make me look like a bookish five-year-old. I have strong features and they really don’t do anything for me. However, I’ve tried on the Enid from Ghost World-type big black frames, and they really suit me. When I can find the time and justify the expense, I’ll probably go get a pair made up for me.
So yeah: strong/vivid features = bold and funky
delicate features = thin and stylish.

I grew up wearing basic black My Three Sons hornrim glasses (hey, it was the 60’s…). As soon as wire frames got cheap, I started getting aviator frames that covered the upper half of my face. Now I’m wearing wire frames that barely cover my eyes, and it’s nice not having a pound and a half of plastic and metal hanging off my nose…

I think it’s really about what you want to wear, and how it fits your face. The geeky girl in heavy plastic frames can be really cute…
