Glee: 1.20 "Theatricality" (open spoilers)

Carol was awfuly quick to move in with Burt and they both treated it pretty casually; is this how most of her relationships have been since Finn’s dad died? Has Finn had a string of live-in uncles?

The 1 BR house is bizarre. That’s like a small vacation cottage or something. Until this episode I just assumed there were 2 or 3 bedrooms upstairs and Kurt just prefered having the basement and Burt used other other bedroom as storage or a den.

Kurt’s supposed to be getting a boyfriend next season which should bring a stop to this thing with Finn.

And you read it here first- his boyfriend is going to be played by…

Morgan Freeman.

It’s going to be TV’s first interracial 50 year age difference gay relationship. (I’m just speculating, I don’t have proof, but it would be nice to add Freeman’s narration to each episode.)

This episode was good. I am glad there was a variety of songs instead of just Lady Gaga’s music. I wonder what is going to happen between Rachel and her mother? They can’t just end their relationship.

She’ll have to be back for Regionals.

I wonder if Iqbal Theba was cast when they decided Principal Figgins should
1- be named Figgins
2- be a vampire believing fundie

As to 2, there are plenty of Arab Christians. No reason some can’t be snake handlers.

As to 1, he doesn’t have to have started OUT as a Figgins. Actor Siddig El Fadil (who played Julian Bashir on Star Trek Deep Space 9 and whose real name is MUCH longer) changed his stage name to Alexander Siddig three years into the show’s run.

He’s Pakistani, not Arab, from what I can find.

My mistake, then. Again, though, there’s no reason why a Pakistani-American couldn’t be a holy roller.

I think he changed his name not to be confused with the popular Sudanese sitcom Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abdurrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdul Karim El Mahdi & Son.

I wonder if Bryan Ryan/Neil Patrick Harris will return. As a school board member and presumably the star of the Lima Les Mis there’s plenty of opening. I also wonder if

1- Will’s ex-wife will be back
2- Quinn will go into labor during regionals (please no, please no)
3- Artie will ever have another dance number. He’s becoming one of my favorite singers on the show. (I loved the true-to-life horny teen awkwardness when he volunteered to Tina, as non-chalant as possible, “My penis was totally unaffected by the accident”.)

Wow, in the last two episodes, there’s been, what, exactly one scene with Sue, total? That ain’t right.

She’s just recharging for the Regionals attack.

The preview for next week’s episode had a shot of her in it.

First time I caught a whole episode of this show (the Lady Gaga songs drew me in, yeah I admit it). Are the actors really singing the songs? Good job if they are.

I liked the scene where Burt defended his son against Finn. Not having known about the characters’ histories, I thought it was brave for the show to be the first one (that I’ve ever watched) defend gay people in such a vociferous way. I don’t care if it’s over the top, gay people need more defenders instead of people who may not actively discriminate against them but simply wished they would go away and hide in the shadows. Go Burt!

On the other hand, it’s odd that they would have that speech, then later censor the word Bitch from the song.

Well yeah. But Kurt needed really needed that to happen. And Finn did need to be straightened out.

Now what would have been the Dad’s reaction if his daughter and his girlfriend’s son were going to be sharing a room, and the girl decorated it too frilly, and the son said it was ‘too girly’?

I guess they felt they had to do another GaGa song. While the actual idea behind the song may not have been appropriate, most of the individual lines did take on a new twist and become relevant in light of their situation, which was interesting.

I couldn’t tell who anyone was other than Finn because I know he plays drums, and obviously the wheelchair was a giveaway.

In the interests of completeness, they also censored:
Walk walk fashion baby
Work it
Move that bitch crazy
Walk walk fashion baby
Work it
Move that bitch crazy
Walk walk fashion baby
Work it
Move that bitch crazy
Walk walk fashion baby
Work it
I’m a free bitch, baby!

Puck was the one with the Star of David eyepaint!! (Where’s ::jewish:: smiley anyhow?) Mike Chang was the cat with the straight long hair, Matt was the cat with the curly long hair who didn’t have a star of David on his face  (did he say “I’m the guy who replaced Artie when he quit?” WTF?)
“But that doesn’t explain the whore lips”

Thanks Cat. I was posting from my Iphone earlier and it gets annoying to try and make long posts. The change from bitch to thing in that section was most of the distraction since it didn’t really fit.

Another great episode! I honestly I don’t know why I am so prone to overlooking this one show’s flaws and so likely to nitpick every other show on TV. I guess I’ve just been waiting too long for a successful musical show, being the musical theatre nerd I am.

I do feel the need to defend Kurt’s dad to the OP. I think that he made clear enough in his rant that Finn is a good person, and that’s why it was so disappointing that he would use such a hateful word to make his valid point. This has nothing to do with how frustrated Finn has a right to be over this situation (which is a lot), but no amount of frustration is excuse for hate speech, however casual and unintentional it may be.

The issue I feel the writers were trying to tackle in this scene was the common use of “fag” in young people, decent young people, who don’t realize the impact the language has. Now you can argue that the scene was too preachy or out of character, but when you put up the fourth wall, I didn’t feel like that speech was undeserved.

I think it’s the musical theatre nerd part with me, plus- very important- the show doesn’t take itself seriously. If they were really going for melodrama or even comedy drama it would be unbearable, but even the drama bits are just there to buttress up the comedy and the music, if that makes sense.

Finn totally deserved that. He may have wound up regretted his rant all on his own, but he deserved it. He deliberately used the word “faggy” over and over again, in a fashion designed to attack and hurt Kurt (sorry). And it was nice seeing Kurt’s father stick up for him and set Finn straight about his word choice.

That being said, I feel Finn was justified in his outburst, even if I feel his method was wrong. It was absolutely HORRID parenting on the part of his mother to just surprise him with something like that. “Oh, by the way, we’re living here now.” He had/has every right to be outrageously pissed off, it was just unfortunate that Kurt got the brunt of it, rather than the parental units who actually deserved it.

I do have one complaint about this episode.

I haven’t been able to get Bad Romance out of my brain for two freaking DAYS! Augh!
