Glee 11/11 (Spoilers after it airs)

Lea Michele proves that they’ve perfected cloning in secret, because if she isn’t Idina Menzel 15 years younger, I’m blind and deaf.

I only watch this show sporadically (whenever supervenusfreak manages to persuade me), but one of the things I like is that there ARE no real heroes…the “good guys” have almost as many flaws as the “bad guys”, and the “bad guys” have redeeming features, too. Quinn’s determined to land Finn permanently on false pretenses, but she’s not immune to recognizing Puck’s streak of heart. Puck HAS a streak of heart AND vulnerability…he’s not a total bully asshole. Kurt isn’t just the “plucky gay kid”…he can be a diva and a half, as can Rachel (and that’s even acknowledged, as in this ep when she says that nobody likes her…that’s because, despite being the ostensible “heroine” of the show, she’s something of a bitch).

I enjoyed this one.

I’m pretty sure we were supposed to squirm through that. I did, and yet I was still wildly amused.

Quinn is sixteen, and scared to death. I can get mad at her, but I just can’t hate her.

I didn’t see the Sue and her sister thing coming at all. That was completely out of nowhere, and out of character, and I’m not at all sure I approve of kinder, gentler Sue.

Team Kurt.

Totally Team Kurt here.

And didn’t see the sister coming, but I’m never that analytical with shows I’m enjoying the experience of watching – I like to sit back and let the story take me where it’s going, not peer ahead to see where that might be.

Also wildly uncomfortable with the finale (I worked in a long-term care facility for physically disabled for five years while I was in grad school, but on the administrative end, not patient care, so the sight of someone in a wheelchair doesn’t freak me out), but also loved the hell out of it. It was funny as hell and brilliantly choreographed. Damn, that must have taken for-freaking-ever to get down so perfectly!

What I liked about the show last night was that it was all about love – Kurt’s love for his dad (and his dad’s love for him), Arnie’s feelings for the Asian girl (sorry, don’t know the character’s name) – which, BTW, I hope he reconsiders, his rejection of her was really lame [so to speak] – Jane’s love for her sister, Puck’s love of Quinn (which seems like the real deal to me), etc.

Plus – the opening number was just freakin’ phenomenal.

I thought it was a strong episode, despite the After School Special vibe – it was totally a Glee version of an After School Special.

Exactly; also great lines like

Also that Kurt’s being gay is an ongoing issue for his dad. I bet dad’s never been bullied in his life, until he got that call; but the took it to the mat for his kid (and Kurt likewise). I just want to make them both a casserole

“I find recipes…confusing” Go Britney!

I liked Kurt’s version so much I actually *bought it. *

I really like Kurt’s dad, too. He’s a man who has never had to deal with this kind of thing in his life…he probably has never even KNOWN another gay person besides his son, but BECAUSE Kurt is the way he is, Dad’s willing to wade into that world far enough to cheer him on, even when he starts getting some of the ooze that the “normal” world surrounds that world with splashed on him. And the fact that he’s Cousin Jimmy from “Yes, Dear” only gives me more of a warm fuzzy!

OK, a few things
Artie not liking Tina now, simply becasue she doesn’t have a stutter? How shallow is it to like her becasue of her disability, or the fact they share a disablity? If he expects people to look inside him, shouldn’t her look inside her. Yes , I know she lied about the stutter, so maybe they should make it clearer that the reason Artie doesn’t like her now is because she lied!! I think many people are gonna see it as he like her with a disability and dislikes her without one.
There is SOOOOOO much vocal talent on this show, since the Pilot and “Mr Cellophane” we really haven’t seen Chris Cofler (Kurt) show off his A-maz-ing talent. My vote is Kurt over Rachel. She has gotten a solo number in every episode so far, isn’t that enought for some of you?
And speaking of talent, props go out to all the men in tonights ep. If anyone has the CD, they will know that a few of full version of the songs on the CD have parts missing from the show, and many of these are Kevin McHale (Artie) switching into the male lead in place of Corey Montieth (Finn - AKA FrankenTeen). SO everyone should go out and buy the CD (or purchase and download it), and see how great the song can be without Finn’s overly-AutoTuned voice.
Great job on the father-son moments, Mike O’Malley (Kurt’s Dad) should be nominated for a guest star Emmy for this role.
I have to agree the “Penis” line was the best line of the night (yes, high school kids all think about sex all the time, thank god a TV show is trying to be honest about it), but you have to like the line
“No, Brittany, your other hand”

I didn’t feel well last night, but I hung on to watch Glee.

I’m so glad I did.

I would have voted for Kurt too. Tears in my eyes when his dad went to bat for him.

I was shocked by the big sister and I loved the ending. As said up-thread, no one is 100% good or evil. Remember our hero planting drugs and blackmailing Finn in the first episode?

I was touched by Puck this week.

I miss Emma.

Yeah, this was part of the good thing/bad thing of this ep. No Terri (good), but no red-headed ferret either (bad).

*I still say that Emma had the best line on this show, ever…in the episode with Cheno, about Kurt (“I’m ruling out a fake ID, since he looks like an 11-year-old milkmaid.”)

Hell, I was touched by Puck this week. And I’m a middle-aged, cynical gay guy who isn’t really into bad boys. There’s just SUCH a vein of vulnerability and WANTING to do the right thing behind those sharp eyes and “rebel” haircut.

I gotta give credit to Mike O’Malley for some great acting this episode. He did a really good job conveying the fact that he loves his son but he still has absolutely no idea how to deal with him.

I don’t think he doesn’t like her because she doesn’t have a stutter, he doesn’t like her because she’s been faking it. Which I totally agree with him. He has absolutely no control over his disability, but she does and she’s using it to her advantage. She maybe using it to avoid people, but what if it was for a different reason? What if she was faking being in a wheelchair to get special treatment, and then she revealed that she could walk? Would you still feel the same way?

He’s gonna go batshit when he finds out about Finn’s job.

I don’t think Puck is such a great guy; in fact, I think he’s the “your son’s a fag” caller.

I didn’t like the “softening” of Jane Lynch’s character. Similarly, I didn’t like Jamie Pressly’s character in** My Name Is Earl **as much when they tried to make her more likable.

Puck is like Tony Soprano in that he thinks of himself as a nice guy just trying to provide for his family but in reality he’s a sociopath.

I predict wheelchair guy will reconsider.

The girl won the singing thing fair and square, IMHO.

Good point. How would anybody outside of Glee club find out about the Diva-off in the first place?

Well, all he said was “Your son;s a fag,” not “Your son’s a fag because of a diva-off.” No reason to assume that he knew.

Technically Kurt is only “out” to the Glee club and his dad (that I know of) but of course that wouldn’t stop the rest of the town from branding him. And the dad had said the calls had been coming for a while so the most likely explanation is it’s someone the dad knows who has a personal beef with him (who else would care?) but this show is not about plausible explanations. I just thought it sounded like Puck’s voice and general attitude.

I say again, how could anyone in the town or the school imagine that Kurt isn’t gay?

And when Britney and the Down Syndrome girl first appeared to buy a cupcake one of the other cheerios said something like, “Britney likes her because she let’s her copy off her math tests.”

So, they can’t afford ramps into the auditorium, but they can afford a bunch of ramps on the stage to wheel around on – without an audience, to boot? lol, this show’s crazy!

And Rachel totally pwned Kurt on that song. But he was good enough that they should’ve just called it a draw and made it a duet or something.

Softening Sue again? Really? Didn’t we get enough of that with the swinging Anchorman ep? They should’ve held off on this until at least next season (assuming there is one).

Is there any (rational) reason why Artie couldn’t have ridden on a normal bus? Just have Finn or Puck pick him up and carry him to a seat, then either stow the wheelchair, or if for some reason that doesn’t work, have his dad drive the wheelchair to the event. Dad would drive either way, but Artie would get the group experience, and they wouldn’t have to needlessly waste money on the short bus rental.

Liability — insurance would never allow it. But Glee isn’t rooted in the real world anyway.

That could easily be done with some plywood. Permanent ramps, built to code, would be a lot more expensive.
