Glee: 2.07 "The Substitute" (open spoilers)

Egad, I hope not. That would be the suckiest thing that ever sucked.

I don’t agree one bit, but this post still gave me a good chuckle. I don’t care for Gwen Paltrow either, but I dug for once in this episode. I’d never even heard that “Forget You” song, but I enjoyed its performance in the episode. I’m a little Shuster-esque in my taste in horribly outdated music, but a fun song is a fun song. I’d rate the episode between “Meh” and “I liked it.” I’m one of those losers who doesn’t really care for the plot of Glee, but like when they sing. You’re right about Brittany and Sue, though: they are 100% responsible for bringing the funny into the show. Maybe we’ll give Kurt a 3% slice.

I’m surprised the writers of the show haven’t set up a Britney twitter account. I’d sign up for that.

I’m pretty sure this was my favorite episode of the season, which has been pretty disappointing so far. Gwyneth was impressive - up there with Harris and Chenowerth in terms of guest stars. And there was some Kurt, but it wasn’t the Kurt Show so that was good too. Could’ve used more Brit-Brit, though.

Yes!

Other than Nowadays I thought the songs were forgettable (the Make 'Em Laugh number might have been better had Joseph Gordon Levitt not done it last year on SNL and the Singin’ in the Rain mash-up at the end was unwatchable). Plotwise though it was great, and Gabourey Sidibe’s Cameo was freaking brilliant. They must have edited out Sam’s shirtless scenes.

I’ve never been a Gwyneth Paltrow fan or a Gwyneth Paltrow non-fan- she’s just kind of there, doesn’t embarrass herself or usually really stand out either in the movies I’ve seen (my favorite role was an early one- TJ’s daughter in Jefferson in Paris) but she was outstanding in this. I think she deserves and Emmy and wouldn’t mind at all seeing her added at least as a recurring character.

This could go either way. It could get annoying if it’s just done arbitrarily to fit the needs of the plot. But if the writers are clever they could do some fun things with the ‘unreliable narrator’ trope. HIMYM has used it to good effect. I did find it amusing when they showed Shue supposedly saying “good news, I found another Journey song!”

I did not know those existed. Thank you.

Toilet Brush? LOL

I think Gwyneth was really good…very impressed with her Spanish!

I agree with this - Make 'Em Laugh would have been better if I had not seen JGL nail it so recently; he did it better than these two. And I didn’t care for the rain mashup. I thought Paltrow’s numbers were the highlights.

I was even inspired to get out my Chicago DVD to watch the Nowadays number but apparently I loaned my DVD to someone! Aurgh!

Paltrow was amazing!

Even though that Umbrella/Singing in the Rain mashup was atrocious musically, the production was fantastic.

I’m not a Paltrow fan overall, but she did a great job in this episode.

Overall, this may be my favorite episode to date.

Loved the last dance. Haven’t seen water used so well since Flashdance.

That was flipping hysterical. (For those who aren’t familiar, “He opened his mouth and his purse fell out” is gay slang for “he starts talking and any doubt he’s gay instantly vanishes”.)

Surely they won’t do a romance between him and closet jock, that would be wrong for a million different reasons. I’m just hoping they don’t do a gaybashing cliffhanger. (We know they won’t kill off Kurt obviously but something like the Season 1 Queer as Folk baseball bat cliffhanger would be way too buzzkill.) At the same time you know they’re not going to leave it alone.

I used to find absolutely nothing remotely good looking about Kurt or the actor who plays him. (I should perhaps mention I don’t usually like skinny guys unless they’re really toned like Mike Chang.) Somehow he’s growing on me though and is actually quite handsome in certain scenes. Also dances a lot better than he did at the beginning of the series.

I think they will probably go a different way with the closeted jock - since he is trying to convince himself that Kurt kissed him, it seems more likely that the jock will beat Kurt up and possibly blame Kurt for coming onto him.

So, most of you liked it, eh? I don’t know what you’re seeing in it; it just basically annoyed me from beginning to end. And Shue’s treatment of his ex-wife; yeah, she’s crazy; the way he blew her off the next day was cold.

Cat Whisperer, I’m not at all clear why someone who doesn’t like musicals would be watching this show – what is it that you like about it?

I’m not sure why I like it, either - I find musicals cloying and lame, but this show seems funny and interesting to me (usually). I like the ridiculousness and the winking at the camera that they have a pianist ready to start playing at any time, I like the way you’re never sure if they’re actually performing on stage or if they’re just imagining something, I like the humour and the * joie de vivre*. Maybe it’s because they usually do more modern songs, not silly ones like “Singing in the Rain.” Show tunes are just so…show tuney.

Does Lonely Planet do a Gay:English phrasebook? Maybe an app?

He’s filling out nicely, but he looks like his adult teeth never came in.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. But then, I was surprised when the big meathead kissed Kurt, so not only do I need that phrasebook, I need major calibration on the old 'dar. But I’m still thinking Puck’s ongoing concern about Finn going gay may be more about hope than worry.

The show was decent once I got my suspension of disbelief settled into place*. Has Gwyneth Paltrow always looked so old or is it because she was standing beside a whole bunch of kids? At any rate, it showed off her flakiness quite well. The Umbrella/Singing in the Rain number was great. I live in a city that rains a lot, so I can wait to go outside and make splashes in the same showy manner!

Oh, and I just loved how the show was poking fun of Will but subversively poking fun of itself with the Journey comments. “Come on guys, there has to be a Journey song we haven’t done yet!” LOL

*I mean, seriously, with a dysfunctional school like McKinley High, I thought Will would have his union rep’s number on speed dial by now. I know, Glee world is not real world (see Artie on the football team)… but geez, there are specific rules in place to prevent subs from usurping a teacher’s job just because he was sick!

The important thing is that the show had a bunch of Sue. I swear, I’d watch the show if it were just 45 minutes of her.
