Glee Project

What, no love for The Glee Project? I am a freak for contest shows, so I am enjoying this one that involves picking a new cast member for Glee.

The format involves putting them through Glee-esque production numbers, then having Ryan Murphy kick one off the island every week.

So far, my favorites are Matheus (hell, even I could write a character for him) and Cameron, although there is no one I dislike except Lindsay, who is just a wee bit full of herself.

Any other fans?

I haven’t seen much love for Glee! here, so I was a little afraid to post something, even though my friends finally got together as a group and watched all of the TiVoed episodes up to current last night.

Any favorite contestants so far? Current likes of mine are Samuel (he’s hot, I’m shallow) and the Irish boy (he has an accent and an amazing voice, and I’m shallow) . Alex is a perfect divo, and Cameron (sp?) is dorkily cute.

Sadly, none of the girls except the tiny red-head are very likeable, and none are really interesting. That nearly-black-haired Katy-Perry bitch clone is awful, but not interesting. I’ve known too many musical theatre people just like her to be even remotely interested in that particular personality any longer.

I was a little surprised that the boys were so far ahead on the personality scales.

Why is personality relevant? Why does an actor’s real personality matter? Are they going the opposite of the normal route and picking a mediocre actor who is a great singer?

That’s not a knock, BTW. I just think they are practical and cast actors who can somewhat sing, not singers that can act. You can punch up singing in post. It’s a lot harder, if not impossible, with acting.

For me, personality is important for this “reality show” because we’re supposed to be rooting for the contestants as real people, not as actors. They’ll BE actors if they win or get cast in supporting roles, but right now, it’s a reality show, and the real personalities (or the exaggerated caricatures you get on these types of shows) are what makes them engaging or not. I don’t think the crew of girls is as engaging as the boys.

For the purposes of Glee, the director has this really weird approach which is seen most easily in the “elimination songs” at the end of the night, where the bottom three contestants essentially sing for their continued presence on the show. Basically, he’s wanting the contestants to create a *persona *that they are auditioning/competing with, so that he gets a feel for how easy/interesting it would be to write for them as a castmember/character in the Glee ensemble.

HOWEVER, It’s really weird to hear the director and the other “adult mentor” characters continually admonish these kids to develop a better, yet simultaneously “authentic” persona to compete with. That “interesting but authentically based on the actual actor’s personality/experiences” concept seems really weird to me.

It seems to be saying, unless you have a really interesting personal life yourself, there’s no way you can act. And, conversely, the ONLY way you can act is like a caricature of yourself, so you may as well get used to it, because if we don’t like/can’t use that particular caricature, you’re SOL.

Very strange.

i watched 2 episodes. 1st episode was where the midget was up for elimination but they booted the underconfident homely girl off. I got hooked because i thought the latin chick was decent enough eye candy (though i felt she was the next to go because she was essentially Rachel Berry with a Queens attitude). the second episode was the one where… yup… they booted the only half-decent looking girl off the show. i too dislike the cliche egotistical fake-sincere musical theater girl and i’m only assuming they’re keeping her around solely for the show and not as an actual candidate. it took me a while to figure out Alex was a guy (it was ambiguous for a while). also, i was shocked that the wispy girl at the end came out with her sign saying anorexic . everyone else was pretty easy to spot or generic. admitting that one bit of detail took some guts. also, i thought the latin girl’s sign seemed… off. it was a bit more daring than the diva’s yet equally unconvincing - especially after she was consistently being flirty for the remainder of the show.

Not feeling the love. I PVR it, scan through to the completed number and then watch them sing to stay. Maybe it’s because I’ve only seen a few episodes of Glee (been trying to watch it, I finally set it up so maybe I’ll see some of it).

And Alex is a guy? checks the website Huh… I seriously thought he was a she.

Well, I was happy enough with the finale. I liked the results. I alsways thought there should’ve been some sort of diminishing rewards for the final 6 (Winner - 7 eps, snd - 5, 3rd -4eps, etc) I’m glad the performers got to pick their own songs at the end, and I loved seeing the Glee cast and the booted off auditioners in the audience.

I think Alex (the Mercedes/Kurt love child! Hee!) is a self-absorbed diva (with pipes!). Samuel (the producers want me to be vulnerable? I wish they hadn’t told me that 6 eps ago!) seems to say whatever he thinks the producers want to hear, and his rendition of Jolene didn’t do much for me, but I can see how he’d be a good character. Lindsay’s just blah. Gimme Gimme some personality. Damian seems very sweet and likeable, but truly didn’t have the singing or dancing chops. But neither does the kid who plays Finn, and he’s been the leading man through the whole thing. The producers were right in saying you just root for him.
