Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally will not be political (& other Tea Party nonsense)

Interesting. Been about twenty minutes now, at what point did you begin to shriek incoherently at the TV? My record is ten minutes, but I was in a really great mood.

Well, that was a huge waste of Time. CW is a pretty soft-ball interviewer, but he went all mushy on Beck. He’s usually better than that. Didn’t learn anything other than that Beck thinks Obama believes in Liberation Theology and that salvation is a group thing, not an individual thing. Well, I don’t think Obama is an LT adherent, and I don’t think LT teaches that about salvation, although I have to admit to not knowing a whole lot about LT.

Nah, they will offer him a chance to repent… THEN they will burn him at the stake

He’s being cute as the Dickens. Liberation theology is primarily associated with the Catholic Church as it is practiced in Central and South America. Closest parallel in America might be the Catholic Workers of the 30’s. and Dorothy Day. Of course, many Protestants recognize that Jesus’ admonitions to feed the hungry and clothe the naked are binding, and preach a gospel very much in synch with liberal social ideals.

Mr Beck would like us to believe that such liberal ideals are in contrast to the essential Christian message, or even in contradiction. Mr Beck is full of shit.

Why not, a lot of them bought into Hope & Change too

There are definitely people who make me want to shriek at the TV, but I had a different reaction to Beck. I got the same feeling I get when someone I don’t like insists on not only talking to me, but invading my personal space. I want to escape.

As for the Liberation Theology, I have always associated with “radical” Catholic priests in Latin America, too. Not necessarily Latin American priests, but American and/or European priests working there. I assume that Beck is trying to characterize Rev Wright’s theology thusly. But I know less about Rev, Wright’s theology than I know about Liberation Theology. At any rate, I can see where someone not prone to fact checking might get the impression that Beck was an intellectual heavyweight.

FWIW, Beck recanted that statement today, as part of the “liberation theology” remarks.

Them?
I think not.
His supreme maverikiness John McCain, and sidekick Sarah Palin are who turned these people on last election cycle.
The former half term governor was probably as big a draw as Beck himself at saturday’s event.

He’s probably referring to Black Liberation Theology. I read a bit about it when Reverand Wright was in the news. So he’s discussing doctrine with Chris Wallace?

Interesting. In that case, I can accept that Obama embraces (or embraced) BLT (ha!), but I’m still not getting the collective salvation thingy that Beck stated. I’m going to check and see if a transcript of the interview is available, as I don’t trust my memory to recall the details of that tenet Beck was claiming was at the core of BLT.

and, oddly enough , after reading through a couple of articles about it again as a refresher, it seems that what Glenn is headed for in his “Restore Honor” by going back to church thing is very in line with Black Liberation Theology in it’s efforts to reform society through the principles of the gospel. BLT focused on the issues of it’s day among the black community. Racism and equality. They could be very critical of America at times because of racism. {see Rev Wright’s comments}
Goitta admit, if that’s where he is going that’s some balls. Slap a new coat of paint on BLT , and call it your own. I also believe they are rather covertly stumping for the GOP while calling it a people grass roots movement. All very clever.

and why the hell would such a tenet matter? link a transcript or video if you find it. I’m curious about where Beck is going. I’m going to have to watch him again for a while just to figure it out.

Obama has never in his life said that he embraced BLT. He was attracted to Wright’s church for the community and because of Wright’s genuine efforts and accomplishments in community service. Obama is all about community service. You read his books and speeches and you see he really believes that shit. His actual theology is fairly non-descript and wishy-washy. Abstract. Non-specific. Very ecumenical. Very much an “all roads lead to Rome” approach. He does not get hung up on doctrine. I think he probably believes (the way a lot of people do when you dig a little) that there is something, which he feels and tries to commune with, but that specific dogma is just hot air.

He was trying to rephrase his response to Obama’s reaction to the Skip Gates incident. He wanted to say that Obama wasn’t a racist, but that he looked at things through the prism of BLT-- something most Americans don’t do.

I believe he also mentioned that he, as a Mormon, was also someone with whom most people in the US (or most Christians) would take issue over his specific theology.

ThinkProgress. The usual prophylactic procedures apply for such persons as might fear contamination from reason.

What incredible arrogance Beck has. He is the one to restore honor to the civil rights movement and reclaim it? From who? Who dishonored it? What makes him the spokesman? What would he do with this reclaimed power and responsibility? He is a clown and should wear floppy shoes when he gives speeches.

How can he reconcile that with saying Obama has a “deep-seated hatred for white peope?”

I wonder if he’d appreciate if TV commentators decided that Beck (or Mitt Romney) were incapable of seeing anything except through a Mormon prism – and they are professed Mormons. Obama has never claimed to be an adherent of BLT. So Beck is insisting that Obama’s actions and thoughst are informed by a theology that Beck has no basis for saying that Obama even believes in.

He actually called Obama “demonic?” Mace buried the lead.

I’m kind of surprised to see he only drew 87,000 people for his Million Moron March yesterday. Sounds like it was kind of a flop.

I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean.

I honestly didn’t catch the demonic thing. But I wasn’t watching all that intently. I was posting on this MB with Wallace’s show in the background.

I looked for the full transcript, but it wasn’t posted yet. Maybe later today or tomorrow.

Did anybody see the moment where he was asked about a Beck/Palin ticket for 2012? He said no way would it happen, but in such a way as to convey that he was neither surprised nor humbled by the notion.
