Gobble ‘Til You Wobble, Or Not In The MMP

I’ve never had this green bean casserole. Might have to try it some day.

Nope. Called the issuer today and it’s definitely fraud. And this is less than 30 days since it was issued. Clearly, some business that we use has been compromised and likely doesn’t know it. I’m going to have to puzzle this out, but a likely suspect is the grocery store we use on a weekly basis. I also have to emphasize to the wife that she needs to tell me when she’s ordering something, so I can verify it if needed.

The meeting with corporate went pretty well. As suspected, a big part of the director’s departure was the pet issue, and apparently staff were turning in resignations because of her heavy handed style. Less than a month must be some sort of record.

Good morning to all! We’re enjoying our last non-rainy day of weather today before the holiday. Currently 44F with a predicted high of around 50F.

hippie, your feast sounds delightful! I’m doing chicken, too. What a lucky family to have such an accomplished cook!

Boo fae, enjoy the festival and travel safe!

FCM, don’t wear yourself out with the boat when you already have enough to do with Thanksgiving prep. But I’m sure you’ll juggle it all just fine.

Sticky, there are sure times in life when it’s good to explore alternatives to What We Usually Do. Not a thing wrong with that. Some of my fondest holiday memories are of meals in restaurants instead of the whole family-at-home nuttiness. Enjoy every bite of what you didn’t have to prepare yourself. Good to get those colonoscopies out of the way, too.

Lily, sounds like you’ve got everything worked out well. Enjoy the family gathering!

Coppertone, have fun at the pastor’s mom’s dinner.

knots, take care with the SAD. It can be quite debilitating, I hear. Do what you need to to take care of yourself.

cookie, hope you find a place to clean the rug at a reasonable price.

taters, hope hubby takes better care of himself for both your sakes. It doesn’t sound fun.

rocky, feel better ASAP! And I will join metal mouse in thanking you for the history of green bean casserole, which is interesting! I personally never serve it, though.

doggio, your Thanksgiving day plans sound fun. Also loved the Pearls Before Swine.

metal mouse, how fun to make the drive to your brother’s in your new rig! I expect you’re going to sort of enjoy it for a change.

nut, I will hope along with you for decent weather for you to celebrate… whatever that unpronounceable thing is.

@Spice_Weasel, I’m so glad you’re getting a “paradise” Thanksgiving! I think you’re ready for one!

I continue preps for hosting my friends on Thanksgiving. Yesterday I cleaned the cement area in front of the workshop, cleaned the last bathroom, made dinner rolls and accomplished more rollsucking. Not much else, and that was fine.

My friends asked if they might do some target shooting while they’re here on Thursday if weather allows, so I made up a couple of targets. I’ve got a perfect spot to practice with a massive hill to lean targets against, but it’s been awhile since any shooting has been done around here. Should be fun, but no one gets a drink until it’s over.

Today I dashed into town early to grab the last of what I needed for the feast. It was mostly fresh produce, although I did pick up a larger chicken than the one I’d planned to roast for just myself. Strangely, the market didn’t have a single whole chicken out. I had to ask the butcher. The entire store seemed off this morning. They were out of lots of stock, few things having to do with the holiday. And I had to < gasp > do self-checkout, as they didn’t have a single checker on duty. I’m not partial to it. I did escape the crowds, at least.

After breakfast today (a sesame seed bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon along with a chopped apple, cinnamon and vanilla yogurt), I will wash and change bedding and towels, do some dusting, give Ollie his holiday week bath and make salad dressing.

Our holiday dinner will start with my version of a Waldorf salad made with butter lettuce tossed with champagne vinaigrette, shredded celeriac, sliced apple, toasted pecans and smoked salmon. The main dinner will be Scarborough Fair roasted chicken, bread dressing, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, honey glazed baby carrots and Brussels sprouts with dill in brown butter. Dessert is pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream. Everything homemade, including the bread for the dressing and the smoked salmon. I’ll serve a chardonnay alongside, or a pinot noir if anyone prefers.

I do enjoy cooking.

Sounds delightful!

Thanks! Your plans sound fun, too, even though you’ll have to endure the turkey. At least there’s Indian food in the offing!

Last Thursday, I got the 14-pound turkey out of the freezer, and put it into the meat drawer of the fridge to that. I poked at it today, and it’s still frozen solid. I took it out and put it on the dishwasher.

Goo is driving me crazy. She goes back to CatMom’s room and attacks Findus. Findus used to be curious and adventurous. Now he just stays in the room all the time. We hate shutting the door and closing him in, but we can’t have him terrorised. (We open the door as much as we can so that he doesn’t get the idea he’s in jail.) Goo just went back again, and I got to her before she got to the door. Findus had already gone into hiding. :frowning:

And in my haste to protect the little guy, I put my computer down on the TV controller. The TV was blaring when I came back from shutting the door. And when I picked the computer up, it was also pushing the power button.

And chestnut stuffing, which I like, anyway.

poor little dude. i hope findus gets his mojo back soon.

i don’t eat the green bean casserole. not a fan of fungus. one of my cousins makes it so it will show up at thanksgiving and christmas. i found the article fasinating and knew y’all would as well. campbell soup had quite the set up in camden. there was even a studio kitchen where the recipe teams would have a cooking show. dorcas is not a name one hears to often (unless it is your name) most people go with tabitha (aramaic version).

Rather than futz with the doors, I stripped the old Cetol off the frame from the forward hatch. FCD was messing with the stanchions. We gave up before 3 because we can!

I’ve got the ice maker going again. Apart from deciding what to do with the chicken for supper, I’m done. I need to remember NOT to eat in the morning since I’m having blood drawn. I may just splurge on a sausage biscuit after - haven’t had one in ages. I need to get the last few feast items, then I’ll come home and gather the trash - FCD is going to make a trash and recycling run before he returns to his shop. I’ll probably help him in the shop a little bit, or maybe not. Life is all will-nilly!

I went back and made him purr for a few minutes… with the door open. Goo is up in the cat tree. Abbey was hiding under my bed. When I came out of CatMom’s room and into the living room, I saw her slinking to hide behind the couch. I think she’s afraid I’ll be mad at her for something, since I’ve been pointing at Goo and saying ‘No!’

Dorcas Reilly - Wikipedia

of course, she has a wiki page. i never knew about porcupine meatballs. mrs reilly was quite the chef!

this one article in the inquirer has sent me down a rather twisty rabbit hole and into a huge warren.

don’t ask about the straus watch. that was a hugh dive with multiple tabs.

koritza plays in the wee hours of the morning because the boy cats would be in bed with me. she wouldn’t have to worry about them attacking her and wanting to wrestle.

I loved porcupine meatballs when I was a kid. I made them from time to time int my forties or fifties, but I stopped eating that sort of thing years ago. I don’t know how the referenced person made them, but I would use Rice-A-Roni mixed into the beef, and I’d use the Rice-A-Roni packet to make the sauce. (That’s how mom made it.)

I like sliced Lox, cream cheese onion and tomato on an everything bagel

A very close friend, who has passes quite some time ago, invited me to the Sunday Men’s Club meetings at his synagogue. They called that combination a “Jew Burger”

We have a very good Kosher bagel restaurant here in flyover country. Our friend BBBooo meets us there periodically for lunch.

Thanksgiving memory:

My Father in Law Frank’s thanksgiving:
Among the things my father in law would eat was roast turkey with some of the usual trimmings. The first year we were married I invited my in laws for Thanksgiving. The meal was going well. Frank was enjoying the food. He was on his third helping of stuffing smothered in gravy. My mother in law asked how I did the stuffing and keep it moist. I told her that I cooked it inside the turkey as it was roasting and that the smoked oysters helped a lot with the moisture. My father in law came to a dead stop and stared at the forkful of stuffing he was about to eat with a look of horror on his face. Then my mother in law asked what I did to give the gravy so much flavor. I told her it was just plain giblet gravy. She asked “What’s a giblet?” Halfway through that answer, Frank dropped his fork and headed for the bathroom. Five minutes later he came out and said “Come on Florene, we’re going home.” He never ate another bite of any food I cooked.

A new bagel place opened in Leonardtown on Saturday, and both Sat and Sun, they sold out completely. We’ll wait for the opening hubbub to cool down before we check them out. It’ll be a challenge because I expect one of their bagels with one of their toppings would be equal to two meals for me. If we can use it as a once-in-a-while treat, it might not upset our food program too badly.

Day is done here. I need to find something on TV so I can finish my current lap robe. Surely I can’t just sit and crochet… Goodness knows with all the streaming options I should be able to come up with a satisfactory option.

Well, I’m not keen on oyster stuffing. I’ll eat it and mom would sometimes make it that way (and I love raw and cooked oysters on their own), but it’s not my fave.

Livers and hearts go into the gravy. Gizzards are chopped very small and go into the stuffing. (I said stuffing!)

I haven’t used oysters in years. My current stuffing is carrots, celery, shallots sautéed with some Irish butter, a bit of olive oil and a splash of chicken stock stirred into chunked up baguettes from the nearby French bakery.

Happy Thanksiving Eve-Eve-Eve! This may end abruptly. My little recliner (like a rgular wingback chair, but it reclines–gave up the ghost. Luckily, I was able to find a similar one at half-price. Unluckily, I have no way to get the old one out of here and to the dump, and my friends are either out of town or are physically incapable, so I had to hire a junk removal service. It’s still cheaper than full-price new, but ugh. So I’m waiting for them and an Instacart order.

We’re having turkey–put in fridge yesterday but am taking it out for an hour or so a day to be sure it thaws. We’re also having dressing (0f course), garlic and sour cream mashed potatoes, a yummy squash casserole my son makes, and some kind of fancy Italian-American cake my DIL is making. All her desserts look like magazine covers and are scrumptious. Oh, and I’m making cranberry orange relish with Grand Marnier (actually a cheaper knock-off). No yams. I like them as long as there are no marshmallows on 'em, but it’s too much, plus the squash makes a nice substitute.

Friday my duaghter’s sister-in-law and her partner are coming over for brunch. They’re vegan, so I got fruit plant-based cream cheese and am making a Mediterranean topping. The rest of us will have lox. Oh, and fruit.
I’m cleaning, organizing, cleaning the oven, etc. A big grocery order will arrive soon.

I have Mr. Max with me, which makes Thanksgiving prep complicated. Hie person, who’s 80, almost fainted on a walk this morning and then developed severe abdominal pain. I tried to get her to call an ambulance, but she insisted on having her friend take her. If she’s admitted, I’ll have to walk Max a mile to Petco, as he’s almost out of food. I don’t know what I’ll do if she’s not home by Wednesday night, as my son and wife are arriving with their two dogs, one of whom is still learning socialization. All my friends have cats or big, oofy dogs, so that’s out. Fun times.

My mom got appendicitis at age 82. Because it took so long to get her seen (first at urgent care, then the ER), it ruptured. She pulled through, though, a real trouper. I got appendicitis about 10 years ago. The pain was pretty intense, but mine didn’t rupture. They had to bring in an on-call surgeon and anesthesiologist. The latter was funny: he kept walking in, syringe in hand, while they were prepping me, and saying, “C’mon, c’mon! It’s gotta be 5 o’clock somewhere!” Just before injecting it into my IV, he said, “In one minute, I’ll be your new best friend.” It was more like 10 seconds. I said, “Whoa. This is some seriously good shit.”

I’m all done with Medicare Part D app. Hallelujah.

swampy, are The Wives among your guests? I know everyone will have a delicious, delectable time.

** Lily**, you’ve never had green bean casserole? How can this be?

Instacart arriveth! Back later.

Good evening everyone.

I think I mentioned this last year, but we are on the Post Office’s gimp list (so our mailbox is in our driveway instead of across the highway). Every year the local woman’s club sends pre-cooked thanksgiving dinners to all of the gimps in the county.

They are very thoughtful gifts for those who can’t easily cook, all of the dishes can be heated in the microwave and the cooked and boned turkey can be eaten cold. While we are able to cook our own meal this year, we hesitated to stop them from being delivered because we know that some year we will want them. So we wrote a check to the woman’s club to help pay for a few boxes so as to assuage our guilt over taking something someone else needs more.

So anyhow, that box came today and will be going to Hub’s cousin’s widower tomorrow. His Alzheimer’s isn’t getting any better (at least he hasn’t gone out and gotten lost again) and while his daughter now lives a block away, she’s fighting cancer and is in a wheelchair and isn’t able to easily cook either.

I’ll go along for the ride, they live half way across the state and it is a beautiful drive. Plus, I want to go to Milton and visit the Blenko Glass company. Hub’s mother used to buy a glass cat for me every xmas. Now that I’m here, I think I’d like to continue the tradition.

Wednesday will be distressing for the fuzzbutts. I’ll be in the kitchen, mostly baking and making strong not-cat-fud smells. And then moving the island around so I can put water on the floor.

I will put aside a small portion of the boozy cranberries for our Friday dinner but half the cookies and one of the pies will go to the neighborhood feast.

You are such a good person to take this on for your neighbor. I do hope she come home tonight pain free.

Mom on the phone, back later

And not nearly often enough for Boo’s liking. Which means I gotta get more organized and plan more hippie and lovely bride bagel lunches.

Last trip I found the Kolache Factory bakery. Merits further exploration.
