So they either had data from 64 years, or many years have multiple “Game of the Year” winners. And in what year would Tetris have been GotY, and what about the years in between that and the next-oldest competitor?
I believe the whole Asylum Vs City debate revolves around City has better overall gameplay but the story was a massive disappointment especially since Doctor Strange was promised to be a so much more interesting villain than he wound up actually becoming.
I feel someone should make some curmudgeonly mumble about a non-PC game winning. Down with consoles!
This is very much an art contest of course. Since I pretty much only play rpgs (and assorted sub-genres thereof, like Diablo-style action games) and strategy games, my own views on even where to start with a top 64 is horribly skewed. No Planescape Torment? But fair enough.
One of these days I really do have to get a decent console and take a deep dive into that realm. Alas, currently my perfectly serviceable old plasma tv with its crappy daylight viewing is holding me back. One of these days I’ll manage to overcome my unfortunate thriftiness and get a modern OLED set or something.
this sounds like GameFAQs best game character. contest which started out as a parody of march madness bracket boards … one year a group trolled the site and the L block in Tetris won
Hm, I can see that, there’s almost always a good use for an L block, and it can often help you clean up a real mess of a layout where nothing else would work. But how do you choose between the L block and his sister the J block?
That’s fair. Asylum had some very frustrating gameplay for me and it was a chore to get through it. I actively avoided combat as much as possible because of the arbitrary targeting. City was very enjoyable for me and I consider it the better game because they got that stuff figured out.
If they were movies, though, Asylum wins hands-down. The story and acting were fantastic. I loved any bits where the Joker would interact with Batman, and I was laughing in real life multiple times with some of his quips. Every villain was pretty fleshed out to me. It’s the kind of game I wouldn’t mind watching someone else play.
My opinion: IGN, like every other video game publication, is so completely dictated by political and economic influences as to make its insights less than worthless. Did give me some useful Assassin’s Creed guides, though, so I’m not complaining.
Would I say GoW is the best video game of all time? No, but honestly it really is one of, if not THE, most complete and polished video game experiences of the last few generations. The art design and polish are amazing, the voice acting is 10/10 across the board with no stinkers, the script is also amazing and the games two huge reveals (even though its almost 4 years old I still won’t spoil them because they were so good but will just say mid game combat and very late game Atreyu backstory) were perfectly placed and extremely organic. The combat is basically flawless once you stop trying to play it like any previous GoW game. The only dings are the overly convoluted upgrade systems and the lack of memorable bosses.
PS4/XBONE generation cranked out some serious classics. GoW is probably the pinnacle.
