Golden Globes to ROTK: Score, Song and Director (so far)

Yaaaaay to Peter Jackson! TORn says he picked up the Golden Globe for best director for ROTK! Woohoo!

Best score goes to Howard Shore and best original song to Howard Shore and Fran Walsh!

I’m betting best picture goes to Mystic River, but we’ll see.

LOTR:ROTK GOT BEST PICTURE!

::runs madly through the thread, screaming::

One film to win them all…

yay For Pj!!!

Hmm… My message was supposed to be in all caps, but it came out differently…

Most excellent and deserved. I’m a happy geek.

Worked well enough for me!

Yay for PJ, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Howard Shore, and the entire population of Wellington!

Cool.

So is Howard Shore eligible for an Academy Award for Best Score, or what? I vaguely remember there being a foo-faw about it last year, with the Academy deciding to suddenly rule sequel scores ineligible, but I’ve heard that New Line has been making a bit of a stink about that issue for this year’s awards.

I hope Shore is eligible for the Oscar this year; he certainly earned it.

Also, it’s a bit late for the “no sequels” rule… John Williams was nominated for all three Indiana Jones scores, and was also nominated for Empire Strikes Back after winning for Star Wars.

It’s funny, I wasn’t planning on watching the GG’s, but got hooked in when my wife flipped onto it just as Shore was beginning his speech. I’m so happy for him, and for Peter Jackson, and everyone who worked on the films… well done!

Eek! After going to bed last night, I realized I had posted spoilers in the thread title, before the actual award telecast. I had stopped watching television after the red carpet show, and didn’t realize that the awards themselves were delayed (what’s up with that, anyhow?). I clicked up this thread this morning, fully expecting to be justly piled on for my stupidity. Sorry, anybody, if I spoiled it for you. Hopefully few people were surfing the dope rather than watching the show.

Oh, and double YAAAAYYY for best picture GG to ROTK!

::thumbs up::

Actually, Williams got a nod for Jedi, too.

However, I doubt Shore will win again, even though there are some terrific new motifs in ROTK (particularly the Gondor theme). Only one sequel has ever won a score award (Godfather II), and that’s because the score from the first film was disqualified. There don’t seem to be many heavy-hitting competitors, though–maybe this is Elfman’s year to take it home.

If anyone’s interested, the **2nd Annual SDMB Oscar Nomination Prediction Contest** (with real prizes) is still underway–ballots are due at Midnight tonight (PST). Drop in and play!

Shore is eligible this year, as are the Makeup people, who weren’t eligible last year (don’t ask me). I think it’s eligible for nearly everything this year. Expect ROTK to grab at least 13, and maybe 14 nominations come Tuesday morning.

I predict nominations for:

  1. Best Picture
  2. Best Director
  3. Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
  4. Best Cinematography
  5. Best Effects, Visual Effects
  6. Best Makeup
  7. Best Art Direction-Set Decoration
  8. Best Editing
  9. Best Music, Original Score
  10. Best Song (“Into the West”)
  11. Best Costume Design
  12. Best Sound
  13. Best Achievement in Sound Editing

There’s an outside chance that Sean Astin will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but I’m not counting on it. If that happened, it would match Titanic and All About Eve as the most nominated film. No film has ever been nominated for 15 Oscars. Without an Astin nomination, it would tie Fellowship’s number of noms. (Fellowship was not nominated for Sound Editing but was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Ian McKellan.)

There’s no chance of nominations in the Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, as much as my greedy fangirl heart loves the thought of 15-17 nominations.

What about Miranda Otto (Eowyn) as Supporting Actress? It doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility to me.

Sure, anything’s possible, and stranger things have happened, but it’s unlikely. There’s been no Oscar buzz whatsoever. If fact, no Awards buzz at all. She hasn’t been nominated anywhere else.

It’s a strong year and there are too many other actresses who had bigger, more substantial roles. I just can’t see Miranda (or Liv) in there with the likes of Holly Hunter and Patricia Clarkson. I don’t want to take anything away from Miranda Otto, who is a fine actress and will make her mark someday. LOTR got her noticed but it won’t get her awards.

Here are the front runners, IMO, in order of likelyhood:

Renee Zellweger – Cold Mountain
Patricia Clarkson – Pieces of April
Scarlett Johansson – Lost in Translation (a lead, but these things often happen)
Holly Hunter – Thirteen
Shoreh Aghdashloo - House of Sand and Fog
Maria Bello - The Cooler
Marcia Gay Harden – Mystic River
Keisha Castle-Hughes - Whale Rider (a lead, but)
Evan Rachel Wood - Thirteen (I know, but)
Laura Linney - Mystic River
Melissa Leo - 21 Grams
Emma Thompson - Love, Actually
Hope Davis - American Splendor
Sarah Bolger - In America
Miranda Otto - ROTK
Jessica Lange - Big Fish
Christina Ricci - Monster
Ludivine Sagnier - Swimming Pool
It’s just not going to happen. Sorry.

Equipoise, it sounds like you’ve got your finger on the pulse of the horse race component of this year’s awards–why don’t you participate in the Contest (see my post above for link)? We’ve got some good submissions but it’s not too late to throw your hat in for a prize.
