Golf: The Majors & The Cut

The halfway cut in this years Masters eliminated all players on +4 and above, leaving Trevor Immelman (-8) eleven shots in front of six competitors on +3.

In any Major championship has any player just survived the cut and gone on to win the tournament? Furthermore, and this is a slightly different question, which Major winner has made up the most leeway from 36 holes to 72 holes to take the prize?

Many thanks.

The 1956 Masters Tournament - there was no cut. Jack Burke won from eight shots back.
