Good book on the Soviet Union

I’ve been interested int he Soviets for a while now and was wondering if someone can recommend a good Comprehesive book about them? If it’s possible, I’d perfer realitivly unbiased (if such a thing is possible).

Thanks.

Hedrick Smith’s The Russians, written in 1976, is a very well-written, fascinating book about life in the USSR. I first read it about 15 years ago.

robby beat me to it. Smith’s “The Russians” is the classic work of Soviet Russia.

What kind of info are you looking for? A comprehensive history? Or just a feel for what life was like in the USSR? Is there any particular period that interests you more, or any aspect of life there?
