Good Job Websites

I like careerbuilder but I think there’s a lot out there I don’t know about. Someone told me about myjobhunter.com which is a paid service. Does anyone know any good tech job sites, finance sites or general job sites? How are these paid services?

I used careerbuilder and monster. Whenever I applied directly for a position, I hardly ever got a call back. The only interviews I got was from staffing agencies who saw my resume online. Apex Systems is who got me my job now. Of course, your milage may vary.

The staffing agencies look for keywords when they’re looking to fill jobs for clients. Looks like you’re looking into 3 job areas, so post a tech-related resume, a finance-related resume, and a general version. Be sure to mention specific software apps you’ve used, because those are the types of keywords they search for. Companies oftentimes are looking for a specific position to fill, and the staffing agency will inform you on how to properly repackage yourself to appeal to their needs.

If the staffing agency asks you if you’re familiar with XXX, say “Sure!” then go to the bookstore and find a manual on it. Study as much as you can before the next talk with them. It’s not lying. It’s prioritizing resources.

You don’t really pay staffing agencies anything. They mark up your hourly rate to the company you work for and pocket the profit. If any of them want money up front, don’t deal with them. Plenty of better services around.

It’s really a crap shoot. If you apply directly to a staffing agency, they might take a look to see if you currently match anything they’re looking for, then bury your resume somewhere if they don’t find anything. It felt that way with Manpower. The Manpower branch in your area might be different. To be safe, apply to all of them.

I’ve had a pretty good experience with Monster. I got quite a few calls from staffing companies, but I also got some direct from companies.

I have gotten a ton of leads from Dice, mostly headhunters but a few direct contacts from very reputable companies. No charge, I’d give them a try. AFAIK that site is just technical. I also got some leads from ITToolbox, although not nearly as many or as fruitful, although I did land my current gig from an ad posted from a company there that is hiring.

Out of curiosity, what is your skillset?

As a general rule, especially when searching for something in a specific area (ie. I already live here and need a better job) I use indeed.com. It is a search/salary estimate tool that is kind of nice. Returns results from a lot of different sites (careerbuilder, professional journal-type sites, newspapers, and others)

Computer engineering but I kind of want to get into finance. I own a retail business but I don’t need to be there on day to day basis anymore. Before that, I only worked the 2 years after college.

I never really rated monster - I got a lot more hits from the sites below.
http://www.jobserve.com - a lot of tech/finance/other jobs internationally based
http://www.jobsite.co.uk - useful for UK and Europe jobs
