Good Xbox games

I recently bought an Xbox with Halo after playing it a lot at my friends house. After completing it a few times I’ve been on the lookout for good Xbox games of Halo-esque proportions. Many of the people I know with Xboxes only have Halo and rent other games when needed. Those that have different games still think Halo is far better.

My question is are there any games on the Xbox that are as good as Halo? That have the longevity of Halo? Games with good multiplayer would be nice but I’m willing to play good single player games.

PS2 owner here.

They say Knights of the Old Republic rocks. Haven’t played it. Otherwise, just get the good multi-platform games.

Soul Calibur 2.
Max Payne.
Into the Matrix (rent this).
Etc, etc.

Knights of the Old Republic is simply breathtaking. It’s not even my kind of game - I HATE RPGs, and I’m not hugely fussy about the line of Jedi games in general, but “Knights of the Old Republic” is one of the best video games I have ever played, on any platform, in 20+ years of video gaming. It was amazing, exceptional, wonderful. I had my wife and sister popping popcorn and setting down to watch me play it; they said it was as good as watching a movie. It’s that good.

I know it’s sacrilege, but I think it’s better than “Halo.” IMHO it’s the best game ever made for a console.

Of course, you can now get both GTA 3 and GTA Vice City for your XBox, and they’re big fun too.

Nothing beats Halo. Simply said.
However there are some fun games for xbox that have some credibility to atleast rent.

Unreal Championship - Fastpaced, fast action, fast killing shooter. Great multiplayer game (Never got around to the campaign :S).

Soul Calibur 2 - Good fighting game. Great on all consoles, however spawn is prolly the coolest (but link is good too!). IMHO one of the best fighting games on Xbox, or any recent other platform games.

GTA 3 + VC - duh… get it, if its anything like the one on PS2.

Brute Force - Okay shooter… A couple of my friends own it and love it, a couple cant stand it. It’s variable on your opinion. It produces some good teamwork battleing and fun multiplayer games, because you can control 4 guys at one time if its 1v1. Campaign was pretty cool, however me and my friend (Halo pros) beat it on highest difficulty no problem after a couple days (Whereas Halo took weeks [Kinda because I sucked at shooters b4 that, but still])

NFL Fever - 2002 was a good football game, I havent played the newer ones.

I’ll second Knights of the Old Republic. It is exceptionally well done.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is also pretty good - but it’s still no Halo.
That’s about all I own right now with the exception of Splinter Cell which was ruined for me by idiotic save points. What could have been a great game just became incredibly annoying.

If you like driving sims I recomend Project Gothem. I have had an xbox since they first came out and Gothem was included. I still play it all the time and can’t wait for Gothem 2 (released next week!!)

What kind of games/genres do you like?

I like the Rally one better (Rally Sport Challenge?). Something about driving through the countryside.

My list of XBox games to buy or rent include

The Simpsons: Hit & Run (Grand Theft Auto in The Simpsons world) - rent
Amped 2 (Snowboarding; I just love the original Amped, better than the SSX series in my opinion) - buy
Grand Theft Auto double pack (I’ve been waiting on the XBox version specifically) - buy

If you have a good PC, I’d get SW: KOTOR on it instead of XBox. It just went gold this week and should be in stores in a week or two.

I’ll third, fourth, and fifth Knights of the old republic. It might just dethrone Planescape: Torment as the best RPG i’ve ever played. I really do not understand whats so good about Halo. Three years ago it was a decent to good 5 hour game stretched into a fairly mediocre and repetitive 10 hour game, today i can’t possibly see why i anyone would buy the PC reissue when there are so many better options.

Toejam and Earl 3: Mission to Earth

Definitely a fun 2 player experience. If you’ve played the original on the Sega Genesis, you know what I’m talking about. Just brace yourself for a certain level of peculiarity.

This is the only Xbox game I own. I don’t even have an Xbox.

I assumed the OP wanted games that were sort of first-person-kill-the-bad-guys type games, but some other games in other genres on XBox I think are great include

  • SSX Tricky and SSX 3
  • ESPN NHL
  • Project Gotham Racing
  • Splinter Cell - hey, I guess that’s first person

Racing - Wait for PGR2 next week

A way underrated FPS, though it’s probably best to rent, is 007: Nightfire. Brute Force is also a rental because it’s too easy/short.

Most underrated game on Xbox- Hitman 2. Not as slick as Splinter Cell but I thought it was more fun.

I have quite a few XBox games. My faves (aside from halo)

Timesplitters 2 (very much like Goldeneye with a lot of good bot shoot em up action too)
Project Gotham
Tony Hawk 4
Soul Calibur 2
Knights of the Old Republic
Crimson Skies
Mechwarrior
Amped (the first one… i haven’t played the second one yet)
Splinter cell - not for the easily frustrated though… very much a sneak around game)
NFL Fever 2003 (I have 2004 too but i prefer 2003)
Brute Force and Max Payne are cool but too short and too easy in my opinion (I finished Max Payne in a weekend)

Knights of the Old Republic is a must have, as is Panzer Dragoon Orta, which is quite simply the most beautiful game I’ve ever played. An odd descriptor to use for a game, but it’s true- the art design, from the environments to the detail on the dragon steeds, is absolutely gorgeous. It doesn’t hurt that the game is a fantastic rail-based shooter, easily my favorite since Starfox 64.

I believe it’s Enter the Matrix.

My favorite XBox game is Cel Damage. It’s incredibly fun. A great party game.

Well, Im playing Worms 3D.

Tiger Woods Golf

Almost as good as being out on the course in real life.

Crimson Skies is a blast, tied with KOTOR as the best Xbox game I’ve played. (I’ve bought Halo but can’t get into it.)

The Buffy game (I’ve only played the first one, haven’t tried the second) is surprisingly good, but definitely not worth buying a console just for that one game.

I want to second Crimson Skies.

It’s much more arcade-like than the one that came out for the PC a couple of years ago, but it’s still very, very fun. The single player game was a little short but well done. Playing on Xbox Live! is a blast. Getting chased through downtown Chicago with a chicken stuck to my wing is about as much fun as I’ve had online.

Oh, and KOTOR, of course. Mmmmm, Lightsabers.

If you like arcade racers, Burnout 2: Point of Impact is an excellent choice, in my opinion. Even if you don’t like racing, but like crashing, you’ll enjoy this game, especially since one of the game modes is called “Crash” mode! The objective is simply to crash headlong into traffic and cause as much chaos and damage as possible. After the initial thrill of just causing lots of high-speed destruction, each crash track becomes something of a puzzle as you try to figure out the best way to crash to rack up the highest insurance bills.

Another vote for Brute Force as an OK game. It’s not bad the first time around, but the difficulty levels don’t seem to change much; I tried playing it on Brutal difficulty after finishing it in normal, and it actually seeemd easier! Halo it isn’t, but it can be a fun diversion.

I also rather like Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, but none of my freinds seem to.
