Goodbye Captain Spaulding (RIP Sid Haig)

Sid Haig, who played the clown Captain Spaulding in the movies House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects has died. His family has been quiet about the details, but his health has been poor for a while.
I consider those movies to be classic late night low-budget horror goodness. I am sad he has left us and am sad there will be no more movies. A third movie was just released (Three from Hell) with Sid in a reduced role.

This is a little bit of a gut punch. The last I read, he was improving.

I may have to pull out my Spider Baby DVD in memoriam. :frowning:

He definitely played a compelling bad guy, he will be missed in future Rob Zombie productions.

He was in an ep of “The A-Team” as a jailbird, along with Hannibal Smith (not Lecter). Hannibal kept calling him various names, like ‘Lizard Breath’ and “The 200-pound cockroach.” For all his B-movies, I mostly remember him as the bad guy from one of those Saturday Morning Sci-Fi programs (the name of which escapes me currently, and I don’t feel like looking it up).

He was also in one of my favorite episodes of Sledge Hammer!, as one of Dench’s thugs (the one that Hammeroid mentally regressed to a toddler, the episode also guest starred Richard Moll and Armin Shimmerman)

Didn't he also play a lot of the baddies in the old Sid and Marty Krofft "specials"?

Sorry to hear of his passing, he seemed to relish the cheesy roles and had a great sense of humor

Diamonds are Forever
Slumber Inc. Attendant: The stiff, ehm, the deceased back there… Your brother, Mr. Franks?

James Bond: Yes, it was.

Slumber Inc. Attendant (Al Haig): I got a brudder.

James Bond: Small world.

A largely unappreciated actor.

Obligatory IMDb link. A quite impressive resume.

Not just horror films: 3 episodes each of Get Smart and of Fantasy Island. A lot of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Some Hill Street Blues, McGyver, etc. Tarantino gave him a cameo in Kill Bill, Vol. 2 as Jay the strip club bartender.

The guy worked.

And from what I understand a nice, fun guy in real life.

Dragos, in Jason of Star Command

I’ll have to look them up on IMDb (unless you want to post them). I have the Get Smart boxed set on DVD. (Of course I do.)

Yes, we met him at a Horror Movie convention in 2017. He was very funny and approachable. I have a picture I took with him on my Facebook page today.

I remember him mainly for two roles - the first one I saw him in, as a villain of some sort on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and the one time I remember him not playing a villain, on Fantasy Island.

Bah!

Antonio in Che!
NCH in THX 1138
Omar in Coffy
Hays in Foxy Brown
the Judge in Jackie Brown
The Genie in Electra Woman and Dyna Girl (the TV show)
Quuhod in Galaxy of Terror
of course Captain Spaulding

There’s more roles he played in dozens of TV shows and movies I’ve seen, but I remember those best. He was instantly recognizable and a ddamned fine actor.

RIP Mr. Haig; you done good. Thank you.
