I guess you missed the little smiley face next to it eh? If I was going for a serious note, I doubt you’d be seeing that. But leave it to someone to try to make it into something else.
Well, since you asked…I have full season tickets to the SF Giants this year, had Oakland A’s season tickets last year, and went to spring training in Arizona for a week. You? You act like you’ve never known an athlete with a bad attitude before. GET REAL! How can you get paid a million dollars and up to stand in a field on a sunny day and NOT have a bad attitude. Now that I think about it, what’s YOUR excuse?
[sarcasm] Ohh I see… adding smilies to a post makes all right to post any offensive statement you want… Go felch yourself asshole [/sarcasm]
Gee I hope I didn’t offend you.
Keith
Well, I must say, I am impressed. But as far as being sympathetic towards athletes like John Rocker, because he’s getting paid a couple million dollars and is pissed because he has to sand in a sunny field, that’s TOTALLY idiotic. I don’t even know where to begin on that one. Let see… Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Stan Musial(sp?), Joe Diamaggio… Did you see ANY of those guys complain because they were standing in a sunny field?! Please. The sad thing about baseball today is it’s all about the buck. Lets say Oakland hires you, plays you a million a year to play ball. Are you going to BITCH because you have to stand out in the field on a sunny day? I don’t know about you, but I’d be thanking my lucky stars I made it out there in the first place.
I agree with you so far as saying that some of today’s athlete’s exhibit a bad attitude in sports. But your reasoning for them having a bad attitude, that’s just stupid.
Perhaps it’s an East Coast/West Coast thing, but out here in California, saying somebody has a bad attitude does NOT exclusively mean that he’s unjustifiably dissatisfied with the conditions he has to put up with. It can also mean (and in this instance, it does), that the person in question, as a result of having benefitted from what most people would regard as astounding good fortune (for example, say, the ability to earn a couple of million dollars a year), has adopted the stance of one whose shit doesn’t stink, who is entitled to behave boorishly, to whom normal standards of polite interaction among members of society do not apply. In less lofty terms (if I can find a less lofty term than “one whose shit doesn’t stink,”) John Rocker has indicated that he feels exempted from any need to possess or display any humility. This is an ATTITUDE problem. In other words, he has a bad ATTITUDE. Vogue’s point of view on Rocker’s attitude is similar to yours; that the appropriate attitude for somebody who makes that kind of money to stand in a sunny field is one of gratitude. However, unlike you, she doesn’t find the existence of professional athletes with bad attitudes to be terribly anomalous to her entire body of experience.
BTW, one of your own examples of athletic paragons, Ty Cobb, was by all accounts, barbaric enough to make John Rocker look like Cary Grant.
I realized I threw his name into the lot of players I listed AFTER I posted. My mistake. I know of Cobb’s tyrades. He makes Rocker look like an alter boy.
Trust me, merlyn. The Dodgers would sign him today! As would the D’backs, Rangers, Mariners, Cardinals, Angels, Rockies, Expos and every other team that thinks they have a chance to challange the favorites.
Oh yeah, AAA pitcher with a big mouth is just the person they want right? I think you’re a tad bit off base here. MAYBE I’d agree with you if the guy had what he was throwing LAST year. This year, nobody wants him.
I can’t believe after all I’ve read in this thread, not one person has mentioned how humourous John Rocker is, although Vixen did mention the humour of actually getting steamed at him.
But I’m talking about how funny and entertaining Rocker is. I’m kinda bummed that he’s gonna be down in the minors and thus, out of the spotlight, (though I do enjoy hearing about shitty things happening to assholes, no pun intended). He was funny, boy oh boy.
But, for those who aren’t getting it, just imagine if everytime Mr. Rocker went off with his wild comments or attacked a group of people verbally, everyone around him just laughed, not a sarcastic laugh, and not laughing at him, but a genuine laugh. Now that’s the way to get to someone.
But this is of course the Pit, and, myself being still new to this forum, perhaps just calling him an asshole might be more appropriate.
Merlyn, you keep stating that Rocker makes “a couple million dollars”. Have you bothered to check what his salary is? You aren’t even close. Or do you just like spouting off without knowing what you’re talking about?
One thought about the statement that most major league teams wouldn’t want to sign Rocker. Not to be too much of a cynical bastard, but from what I can see about the ethics of most baseball owners I could imagine several of the struggling small-market teams wanting Rocker because of his controversy. 10 thousand people a night to boo and throw batteries is still 10 thousand seats sold. Obviously New York,Atlanta,LA don’t need bad publicity but some of the others ???
P.S. it does piss me off that people will put that much effort into hating a man who said something perfectly legal, and happily cheer for rapists, wife beaters, and child molesters.Rocker is an asshole, but Mohammed Ali used to say that all white people are devils, and he is one of the mopst repected athlets ever. I guess the worst crime in America is to insult New Yorkers. I also find it beautifully ironic that New Yorkers decided to respond to a man saying they were mannerless and dangerous by throwing batteries, the defense rests.
Aww man, baseball needs John Rocker. We need some bad boy to root against, just like Dennis Rodman was in basketball. The game is becoming more like cricket now. I know that he brought it upon himself with his threats to the SI writer. But now, I don’t have anyone to throw my dead batteries at. Oh yeah, there are still the Dodgers…
For Merlyn’s benefit, John Rocker makes less than 300,000.
A pittance, in todays terms. Most, if not all, teams would gladly risk 300k on the prospect of him regaining last years form.
And make no mistake, John will regain that form. He will be dodgeing batteries and beer and inane New Yorkers scorn in no time.
