John may well learn that being hated by some could be very profitable. Some people will come to the park just to boo him.
Thank you, Kyla, for pointing something out.
I didn’t read the original SI article, but it occurs to me this whole thing wouldn’t have happened if the writer had just elected not to include that comment. OR decided that this guy was such a prick, he didn’t deserve the coverage and pulled the article altogether. So why did they include the comment? Knowing it would stir things up? Increase mag sales? Did they want to see this guy roasted for being an bigot? I’m not necessarily taking issue with SI for this, but I am interested in knowing the decision-making process for including it. Curious is what I am.
How important is it to expose public figures who are idiots? I can understand why it might be important for the media to report when public officials–especially elected ones–make dumbass bigoted comments. But is there a similar public interest served by exposing an athlete as a jackass? I mean, sure it made for damn good reading, but another editor might have decided it was too offensive or small-minded to repeat. And then the whole story would have been…well, no story.
So, that didn’t take long. He’s back from the minors, pitched last night. Not very good from what I hear, six “balls”, and out he went. But boy oh boy, was that a quick come back to the majors or what? Merlyn, how can this happen? You swore no team will bring him in…
