Goodbye, Kim the Mercodog

It’s been a rough 2006 at the Mercotan household. First, Fluff the Mercocat passed on of old age. Then today, Kim the Mercodog went the way of all fur.

Kim was a Golden Retriever, and her full name was Kimchee, because that’s how she smelled sometimes. Well, a lot. Her fuller name was Kimchee for Brains, because that’s how she acted a lot. Well, almost always. But her Registration name was Varda de Mercotijn!

She loved the water, which was nice since we live on Lake Michigan. She enjoyed pursuing seagulls into the water. She’d swim out after them, and when she neared them, they’d all fly far away. So she’d return to shore.

She tried this routine on ducks, and it nearly led to her demise. She’d swim out to a duck, who would watch Kim until she neared the duck. Then the duck would fly out another 60-70 feet, and land in the water. Kim would continue the pursuit. The duck would pull the same routine. I suddenly looked out into the lake one day to find that Kim was about a half mile out and still swimming hard in pursuit. The ducks acted smug.

She liked sailing too. She’d climb on board, get excited on the catamaran, run around too much on the boat, then fall overboard. Except when she got excited, ran around too much on the boat, threw up, then fell overboard.

She enjoyed swimming with us in the lake. One day, she came out to join me in the lake when it was really too rough for her, but she insisted on being with me. So I headed in, and she followed. But the next thing I saw was a giant breaker, which she was body-surfing perfectly, with just her nose sticking out of the crest, as she flew past me!

After those adventures, we made her wear a doggie life jacket in rough water.

She enjoyed any water. The lake, creeks, wading pools, puddles, no problem. She even had a jolly romp one time in a septic tank overflow pit. When she came out of that, she looked like a black lab from the neck down. Fortunately Lake Michigan was not far, and it was rough that day! In mere days she was allowed back in the house.

She enjoyed pursuing wildlife. She’d chase deer, skunks, fish, birds, and cars. She enjoyed bringing home parts of deer, and munch on them by the front door, as she greeted guests.

She didn’t listen, couldn’t fetch or catch anything thrown to her, and did not tolerate small children gladly. She put the fear of dogs into more than one young toddler, without actually eating them. She was horribly flatulent, and her last years were endurable for those around her only thru the miracle of Beano.

My favorite image of her was a picture of Kim in a blizzard. The wind was blowing so hard that her ears achieved lift! I’ll see if I can dig that photo out, and perhaps elfbabe will have time later to post a link to it.

But time slowed her down. She couldn’t keep up with walks anymore, no matter how slow we went. Despite doggie meds like Rimadyl, she finally just wasn’t able to function. So at age 14 and a few months, it was time for her to go.

:frowning:

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Sending supporting thoughts your way.

Good night, sweetheart. Sounds like you had a high old time while you were here! You’ll be missed.

(Damn, that’s the second dog this weekend. Some friends of mine said goodbye to 15-1/2-year-old Ziggy on Saturday. Think I’ll give my Scout an extra biscuit tonight. She’s 12 and counting, and also on Rimadyl. Her wobbly days are getting closer together, although she still gives her favorite ball what for.)

The reason I became a member of this board was the passing away of my beloved cat, Mao, and the SDMB provided me a forum to express my grief and to publicly remember her, much as you have done for Kimchee and Fluffer.

I have a soft spot for critters, and I’m sorry to hear about Kimchee passing away. It sounds as tho she had a great life. Thank you for telling us about her.

QtM and ElfBabe, I am so sorry! Kim sounds like she was a great dog, big and goofy and loving, just as a dog should be. I hope she will always romp and frolic in your memories, since she can’t do it here anymore.

All my best to you and the MercoFam.

Aw, Qadgop and elfbabe, I’m so sorry.

It sounds like she was a true Golden dog.
My sympathies on your loss.

Tell your pets to stop dying. You’re going to run out at this rate. You have my condolences.

Aw. Sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a puppy is never fun, but it sounds like a good, solid, fun life was had by everyone involved.

My sympathies to you and elfbabe. The very bestest dogs in the world are Golden Retrievers. Mine was. Kim the Merodog sounds like she was, too. :frowning:

Thanks all. One may find Kimpix here, courtesy of Elfbabe:

The kimpix are the ones with the dog in them. The last one is the famous blizzard/flying ear photo.

So sorry for your loss.
Kim looks, and sounds like a fine beast.
Good that you got 14 years out of her - my golden is slowing down significantly just shy of 9.
Even tho when you get a dog - you HOPE it predeceases you, doesn’t make it any easier when the time comes.

the blizzard picture is awesome. i would buy that in an art gallery.

your kim sounds like she had a great life with y’all.

“The misery of keeping a dog is his dying so soon. But, to be sure, if he lived for fifty years and then died, what would become of me?”
— Sir Walter Scott

One animal lover to another, I’m very sorry for your loss, Qadgop and elfbabe. :frowning:

OH, that is SAD. And so soon after the Fluff cat, too. I am so sorry.

All the Golden Retrievers I’ve known have had huge hearts, a ready tongue for slurping faces, and knew how to smile.

My condolences to the Mercoclan.

I’m sorry that you’ve lost Kim. It sounds like she had a great life with you, doing all those great watery fun things. This looks like a picture of a happy dog. May she be romping in dog heaven. She sounds like she was A Very Good Dog.

Quite the noble beast. It sounds like she lead as full a life as any dog could (and more so than most people).

My condolences.

(((hugs))) It is never easy to let them go, is it?

Kim sounds like she was a wonderful dog, and obviously much loved. And that is really all any dog can ever ask for.

You have my sincere condolences.
