We got Scooby and Molly eleven years ago. They were two puppies out of the same litter. Molly passed away many years ago from a liver problem.
Scooby has always been one of the dumbest dogs on the planet. Seriously, he used to get lost getting out of the minivan. If you had your feet up on the coffee table and he wanted to be on the other side of you for some reason, he couldn’t figure out that all he had to do was go around the coffee table. He would just stare at you with this dumb look on his face until you moved your legs, and then he would go by. One of my friends told me that you can roughly judge a dog’s intelligence by throwing a blanket over his head and see how long it takes him to get out from under it. Scooby never got the blanket off of his head.
While he wasn’t exactly the smartest dog, he was very lovable, very laid back, and very gentle. A lot of people said he would have made a good therapy dog. There were times when he thought he was a lap dog, which at 85 lbs. he was a bit big for, but he was great company.
And he did have one talent in life. He could herd cats. Whenever any of our cats escaped, he would herd them back towards the door until they came back inside.
He comforted my mother when she had dementia. He has comforted my wife through all of her difficulties. And he has been my eldest son’s best friend, as well as being a friend and companion to everyone in the family.
He spent most of last week at the vets, started to get better, came home for a couple of days, then went back in over the weekend, and today he just reached the end.
I’m sorry engineer. Scooby sounds like he was very empathic towards his family, offering so much comfort. Maybe what he lacked in brains, he made up for with love. I’m glad he was with the right family for such a big heart as his, so that he was always loved back!
He sounds like one of my former dogs. We used to say Simon was just like a football linebacker. Loyal to a fault and would run through walls for you, but he never seemed to think beyond the moment.
I’m sure Scooby counted himself lucky, and its sounds like you were too.
My condolences for your loss. Maybe Simon and Scooby could meet out there somewhere, and both look at each other with that “I don’t know, what do YOU want to do?” look.
I am so sorry for your loss. Some people just do not understand how strong a bond someone can have with their pet. I send my positive thoughts and prayers your way.
