Goodness, snakes alive!

After a long week, my cat, Missy and I were enjoying a Saturday morning by sleeping in, when I heard a Bang! from down the hall. My first thought was “What has Bob gotten into now?” I dragged myself out of bed and followed Missy down the hall, where this (warning - not for the snake-o-phobes) is what I found in the living room. Apparently, he didn’t like the painting I had propped up on the mantle, as that was what I heard hitting the ground. He made quite a decoration.

I’m fortunately not scared of snakes, and I knew it was a harmless black snake, so my biggest worry was that he’d break the vase he was wrapped around. My first step was to remove the glass items from the mantle, and we had quite a tug-of-war over that vase. Then I tried to grab him to take him outside, but he wiggle away and wrapped himself in the strap of my laptop case. I finally got him out of there, and carried him outside and let him go in the woods behind our house.

I have no idea how he got inside; this is not something that happens very often. Or ever. Bob is quite the hunter, but I really can’t see him dragging in a four foot black snake. I can only guess that he came in through the cat door and made his way to the living room. I hope he learned his lesson and won’t try it again!

Wow! Great pics, and a cool story.

That’s a hell of a snake to find in your house! I know it’s harmless, but man, that’s pretty long. I hope he’s learned his lesson too!

Coincidentally, I sent the photos to my in-laws and told them the story, and it turns out they had found a similar snake in front of their fireplace just a few months ago. It must run in the family!

I’ve spotted 3 snakes in the last month. Two while out walking the dog, and one in my back yard. They like to come out in the cool of the evening to do their snake-y things, because it’s too hot during the day for man or beast.

(I think they were a blacksnake, a cornsnake and a ratsnake.)

Oh and the two I spotted while walking the dog? She walked right over 'em like she didn’t even see 'em. :smack:

Eee! Eee! Eee! Now that is a LONG snake!
