Google's icon today in honor of ....what? (A doper IQ test)

Go to Google–fast.
Right now.
Today (march 14), before midnight

Look at that logo…
Yes, that’s the one I’m talking about–
—the two OO’s of the word google look like a couple of , well, pancakes. And they’re sitting on a grid that looks like, well, a xylophone.

Quick, tell me what you’re thinking.
You’re a Doper, one of the smartest people on the planet, so naturally, you automatically think of:

…Giovanni Schiaparelli?

Okay, folks, let’s hear it…and let’s be honest. Who recognizes that name?

Yeah, I knew there was a astronomer in the 19th century who started the whole business of life on Mars. And I think I knew that he was Italian, or French, or something like that. Because “canali” sure isn’t an English word.
But I sure as heck wouldnt have been able to tell you his name.

How 'bout you?

And yet ever so humble.

Go fuck yourself.

Was that really called for?

I’m smart enough that I hovered my mouse over the logo, and the mouse tip told me that it’s Giovanni Schiaparelli’s birthday. I’m also smart enough to have clicked on the logo, which took me to a Google Earth page that explains the significance of the logo and further says that you can now view Mars on Google Earth.

Probably not, but that smartest-people-on-the-planet stuff is gagarific.

Encyclopedic knowledge is entirely separate from IQ.

Don’t insult other posters in MPSIMS. This is your second warning for insulting other posters in about a week. If you do this again your posting privileges may be suspended.

Yeah, I did that too…But the name G.Shciaparelli meant nothing to me, until I read the linked info. And I was just a bit surprised that Google used a pretty obscure name to advertise the new feature viewing Mars.
So I thought I’d start a nice little thread, with a bit of good-natured humor and a question about how many other people like me had never heard the name before.

But I guess having fun on MPSIMS is a little beyond some people.
( and my only reaction to convict is to suggest that he move somewhere more appropriate to his username…for, say 25 to life.)

If you’re insulted by another poster, report it (if the mods have not responded). Don’t react in kind.

Yeah, you’re right.
Sorry.

The increasingly inaccurately named Google Earth.

And I recognized the guys name as “the Martian Canals” guy when I moused over the logo. Sure as hell didn’t know it was his birthday though. Hell, it took me a bit to figure out that the logo was supposed to be mars, its not their best artwork.

Interesting enough about the logo. But I doubt the inferred correlation to IQ is substantial at all.

I, on the other hand, deduced that it was Mars immediately, moused over the logo, said “who?” and went on with the search I’d come to Google to run, so I’m kinda happy that I now know more about the connection without clicking on the real link.

I did not run ask my mother if she’d seen Google’s image of the day the way I did on Seuss’s birthday not that long ago.

Today is Einstein’s birthday, too, FWIW.

Bet if you took 100 random people who knew who Schiaparelli was and 100 random people who didn’t, the average IQ of group one would be substantially higher then those in group two. Sounds like correlation to me.

But anyways, the OP was joking. As he said, he just wanted to point out the interesting logo.

And Pi Day!

FWIW, I knew who Shiaperelli was and had great fun explaining the whole ‘caneli/canal’ thing to my sister. Let’s bask in our shared genius.

That was what I was expecting for today’s logo. Well, that or a Pi Day reference. (And yes, I ate a piece of pie at 1:59 this morning. )

Google is just the normal plain logo for me.

Pancakes would remind me about the farmer from Eagle river Wisconsin that had aliens land and exchange four pancakes for some water. This is without the mention of Mars, because I got that story stuck in my head when a kid.
Story.

I thought maybe a machtesh. Although, looking a the Google Earth image, it isn’t so crater-like from above.

It’s also Pi Day!

Pie day would have been in the year 1592
