I didn’t watch them last night (past my bedtime) and came here hoping there was a thread on it. Anyone?
I only caught bits of it in between other things I was doing so this might not be a fair comment but it seemed as though there were more performances than actual awards given. I did see Lizzo accept one and Billie Eilish received four, I think. I liked the production number for Old Town Road and Usher made a valiant effort in a Prince tribute.
I texted a friend an announced I am officially an old fogy because I don’t know and/ or like the majority of acts that were honored or performed.:o
Hope that isn’t too thread shitty. Each generation gets their time to get jazzed by the current music scene - heaven knows I had mine- and these days I just watch the parts I’m interested in.
I’m a big fan of Lizzo so I watched. Even had it on my calendar! Unfortunately halfway through I got a phone call and was only able to watch on mute.
All the performances were great! Lizzo won 3 of the 8 awards she was nominated for. Billie Eilish won a ton and she deserved it. Sucks for Lizzo that there was such good competition this year I guess.
I really liked Little Nas X’s performance and Tyler, The Creator’s too. The Grammy’s went ALL OUT on stages and special effects. I mean, I might expect them to win an Emmy for that…
Demi Lovato sang a song about her dad, to her dad, and I cried hard. Then they went right to Tanya Tucker singing “Bring My Flowers Now” so I kept crying.
I really wanted to hear what was going on with the special performance of the special song written by the guy they honored as like “Music Educator of the Year” but I could only see it, not hear it. Also I see Trombone Shorty did the background music for the In Memorium part and I bet that sounded great.
Alicia Keys was a super cool and classy host. They did a lot of mentioning of Kobe Bryant (the show was held in the Lakers arena).
All in all a fun show. I still need to go look for videos of stuff I missed.
Oh and yes, it seemed like there were about 5 awards and 20 performances. Very strange.
Yeah, most of the awards are handed out in the preshow nowadays; I think it’s a given that today’s audiences are tuning in to see the performances and not really the awards themselves (they’ve been literally a pop culture joke for years about how little they matter).
I am now officially an old fart. I heard on the news that Billie Eilish won all the major categories with her song “Bad Guy” and the album it was on, so I went to Youtube and played it.
I don't know which I liked less, the audio or the video. I thought the former was blah, and the latter was stupid. In my wildest imagination, I can't imagine wanting to pay money to see or hear this.So I guess I’m doomed to a future of wearing my bathrobe while I yell at the kids on my lawn.
that was Camila Cabello
:smack: Yep, thank you.
Also, Demi Lovato had a very melancholy song.
I too wasn’t very interested in any of the winners. I don’t listen to any of the new music anymore. I was though, excited to see Aerosmith perform Walk This Way with Run DMC. WOW! Talk about disappointing. Steven Tyler needs to hang it up. Aerosmith first sang Livin on the Edge. His voice was very weak, he tried to run around on the stage, but it just looked awful. A couple of times it looked like he almost fell. At one point he was trying to some high kicks - luckily he had a girl on each side holding on to his arms or he would have taken a header. I realize he’s in his 70s but that’s when it’s time to do something a little different. Run DMC sounded pretty good!
Oddly, I really like Billie Eilish’s music (or at least what I’ve heard of it, including ‘Bad Guy’). I don’t normally like a lot of the newer music and haven’t got a clue who most of the new artists are, but I heard Eilish a while back and enjoyed her stuff. I think part of why I like her is that it’s nice to see a teenage female music star who isn’t hyper-sexualized. She seems like the antithesis of that, and it’s refreshing.
Not my usual style of music preference, but sometimes things just click and you don’t know why.
I still want somebody to explain to me why Billie Eilish’s middle name is Pirate.
Because she was born to be a special, creative genius.
Her parents are actors and musicians. Does that help?
A bud who watches it every year said that it was a big disappointment. I have no details because I never watch it and have no basis for comparison.
Rap is a genre I generally don’t follow or listen to, but I loved the performances of Lil Nas X and Tyler The Creator. They both were performance art very well done. Also, I wondered why they were bothering having Aerosmith on as I see them as incredibly irrelevant these days, and I expected their performance to be embarrassing or boring. Gotta say though about halfway through when Tyler and Perry were joined by Run-DMC, the whole thing got some real fire going even though I think Walk This Way is a crappy song.
Why not give her a normal name, like Bookcase or Sandstorm. Or even Hat.
Or Crimefighter…
