Grand Theft Auto V

Random thoughts:

1: Sandy Shores, Trevor’s domain, reminds me so much of New Cayucas and a plethora of other places in the Central Valley that you drive through and think, “I’m about to get murdered for meth money.”

2: I wish there was an easier way to figure out which stores you can go into versus ones that are just painted.

3: I love the new wanted mechanic. If you’re smart you can get away in anything.

4: Trevor’s the only one where I think, “Man, he’s a batshit insane horrible person.”

Am I the only one who gets a really strong Jack Nicholson vibe off of Trevor?

I like the character a lot, though. I also really like Michael. I’m less warm on Franklin, but that’s more because I’ve got very little patience for his crew. I’m very interested to see how things shape up.

I do worry a lot about potentially missing out on stuff because maybe I do something out of order. At one point ( very minor spoiler here )

Franklin mentioned to Michael that he’d lost his job before I actually heard the phone call in game where he gets fired

It’s little, but I wonder if it’s possible for bigger things to go out of order if you don’t rotate between characters often enough.

I heard that too. But I think that’s because Franklin knew he would have been fired. He didn’t actually need to formally hear it.

Franklin’s crew is annoying, but he’s my favorite because I love his special ability and I like the thought of taking someone from the very bottom to the top.

While Franklin is my favorite character so far–yes, his crew is annoying but I find his situation and personality to be the most sympathetic–I’ve enjoyed playing Trevor more than I expected. Yes, he’s a depraved psychopath, but sometimes he’s also incredibly and unexpectedly funny. On the way to a recent rampage of his (that’s not a spoiler; Trevor rampaging isn’t exactly uncommon) the radio in the car he stole had something on that was mild and jazzy. He immediately growled something like “that’s not the right fucking music for this!!” and changed the channel to some thrash metal. I just had to laugh. And of course the curses he shouts while on a rampage are often just flat-out funny. “What is this, a family reunion?!”

Cool on the game for little moments where the characters act on their own volition, not just in a cut scene.

Still getting the hang of landing an airplane. Most of my landings are pretty rough.

Awesome. Thank you lurking and loune.

Could Rockstar have screwed the pooch any worse on their “iFruit” release? The iPhone/iPad version is broken and they did not even have the Android version ready to release.

Playing this after having played Saint’s Row for a long while makes me really feel missing a multi-car storage garage. nothing has pissed me off more than losing a car I had invested money in upgrading because they put the damn mission trigger right in front of the garae and I couldn’t save the car.

Er…there are multi-car garages*…and the vehicle you parked to start the mission usually shows up where the mission ends. And if an “owned” car gets despawned, it’s supposed to be recoverable from the impound lot for a fee.

edit:
*not at the safehouses, though generally nearby - they’re noted on the map.

Don’t trust the safehouse garages. I’ve lost 2 customised supercars though them (small story spoiler); stored one in Franklins garage at his first safehouse then couldn’t get it back once Lester moved me to Vinewood, then stored one at the Vinewood garage which just plain vanished.

Really annoying, about $80,000 down the shit-pan there. Don’t bother buying cars or spending money customising them until this is fixed, would be my advice. Oh, and went to the impound lot, not there either.

Speaking of customisation be careful about overdoing it on bikes. I souped up a crotch-rocket only to fly uncontrollably into a fire hydrant as soon as I’d got it out of the garage and dying. Irritating but funny at the same time.

It started working for me yesterday. I managed to customize my license plates from ifruit. Oh and feed the dog too.

In GT4, when cars “saved” at the parking space in front of safe houses would disappear, I just took it in a role-play sense: there’s a chance your car will get stolen. Actually, not unrealistic.

I’m trying to take it slow on the story missions and I was running low on funds, so I decided to do some cab driving. Good excuse to take in some scenery and enjoy the radio a bit. Sadly, most of the customers seem to only want to go to the sticks. Nothing wrong with the outback, which is often very scenic, but some of the fare drives can be very long.

They got Lee “Scratch” Perry, Kenny Loggins, Bootsy Collins, Wavves, and Pam Grier to be DJs on the radio stations this go-around.

I’m really looking forward to the multiplayer. The missions in GTAIV were fun, but there were only three or four of them available. I suppose a level editor and shared content on the PSN would be too much to hope for.

And Jesco White, if you’ve ever seen “The Dancing Outlaw” or “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.” I recognized his voice before I knew he was in the game.

Oh man do I hate Michael’s family. I wish I could shoot them.

I like the fact you can have a Taxi drive you where you want to go. The soundtrack gets a C- compared to GTA 3, some good tunes, but a ton of junk.

I think the scenery is BEAUTIFUL. It’s like someone took all the best parts of Cali, and smashed them together. When I had a minute, I just drove… it was comforting and aesthetically pleasing.

The soundtrack underwhelms me too. I think the outlaw country station has about 7 songs. But yeah the scenery is amazing, I think its partly because Liberty City was foggy or rainy so much whereas it’s usually bright and clear in LS. The desert looks great too.

So, are there any likeable characters in that game? As in, people you’ll like to know personally and have as friends?

Franklin’s kinda alright even though he starts out as a small time crook and wants to learn how to be a big time one.

Michael only looks good in contrast to his family.

I looked forward to killing Steve and Devin.

Dave was neutral.

Dom and Mary-Ann (not sure of her name, the fitness woman) were both so irritating that I disliked their missions.

Some of Trevor’s victims were likeable in the sense that they were vulnerable victims or everyday people.

Not that I think characters have to be likeable but I’m wondering if there are any.

Also, do any of the investments make sense financially, as opposed to the perks they provide? How do you even get 150 000 000$?

The stock market.

How? I’m having a difficult time making any money.

The best way is Lester’s missions, but there are other methods. There’s a useful guide here.
