I know it’s an old game but I recently got it as a gift, and I’ve been enjoying it a lot.
However, a couple things are bugging me.
1.) I’ve heard about being able to pick up prostitutes. I see them(what I think are them) walking around but I don’t know how to “use” them. Was that only GTA3 or am I missing something? Not that It’ll break my heart or anything to not be able to, but I’d like to know.
2.) I read that you can put your favorite MP3’s into a folder in the directory and then play them on any car radio in the game. I put a couple in there and can find the MP3 player station but I can’t hear anything. Is there something I’m missing here?
3.) I can’t seem to pass Avery’s (Funny Hat) RC helicopter mission. Partially because I’m still having a problem actually learning how to fly the damn thing. I’ve got Tommy’s mansion, so I can access the one on the roof. Any hints?
4.) Anything I should be on the look out for that I might otherwise miss?
Drive up next to them, and park. Wait, and they’ll get in your car. If they don’t get in your car, they’re probably not a prostitute, or you’ll have to get a little closer.
Drive to a secluded spot with them, and park. In a few seconds, the car will start bouncing and your health will go up, while your money will go down. Then they get out.
If you’re feeling particularly violent, you can run them over and get your money back.
It’s been forever since I played, so my memory may be a little shaky here.
I don’t remember being able to pick up prostitutes in GTA Vice City. Only in GTA3. I could be wrong, I just don’t remember being able to do it.
I listened to my own custom music. I don’t remember doing anything special except putting the music file into that directory.
Again, I don’t remember anything special to get up there. you just go up 3 or 4 flights of stairs, kill a couple of baddies, and hop in the helicopter! Lot’s of fun
Don’t cheat. After I completed the game to the best of my abilities, I decided to play a cheat version. Using cheats to help me hit 100% of all the goals. I couldn’t stand all the 90 - 95% completions that I got. I decided to try to get 100% on everything. Ahh yes, I was having a great time, I just completed a mission using cheat codes (for example weapons all, or something like that, or invincible, I don’t really remember what). Anyway I wrecked my car, got out of it, and started looking around, and there seemed to be surprising little traffic on the roads. Eventually it trickled down to nothing. For hours I looked for any type of life, there was none. I was stranded in a ghost town. I never played again.
Well, getting to the chopper isn’t the problem. I’m just having problems flying it correctly, at least well enough for the “plant the bombs at the construction site with the little RC chopper” mission.
I stand corrected. From what I see online, if you drive a nice enough car, you can get hookers. You have to by a hooker and wait until a hooker gets in, then you have to drive to a secluded spot.
I remember enduring a great deal of difficulty with this level too. You just have to keep flying the helicopter until you get the hang of it. It can be used as a weapon too, but not too much or it will blow up Just tilt your helicopter towards the person’s head.
It doesn’t need to be a nice car to pick up hookers, just no trucks or busses or choppers. If you pick up a hooker in a convertible they don’t bother with the car shaking part. You just stop the car, your health goes to 125 and she gets out. Handy! It does seem to be slightly random though, sometimes they’ll get into your car, sometimes they won’t, and without visible reason.
Also, because Tommy Vercetti isn’t a mute like the guy in GTA 3 he’ll occasionally say something when she leaves, same with Carl in San Andreas. “I’m so good, you should be paying me!”
As far as Avery’s chopper mission goes, yes it is very annoying. I played VC on my computer and I found remapping the tilt forward and tilt backwards keys to T and B made it easier to fly the choppers. Also, if you start at the top and work your way down with the bombs it’s better for the timer. It also means when you get to the last bomb you’ve only got a very short distance to go with your probably very beaten up toy helicopter so it doesn’t matter if you’re not a good pilot.
Things you should watch out for? Even if you’re not into collecting secret packages, try and get at least 20 which gives you body armor at some of your hideouts. Very handy.
I only played it on the PS2, and flying the helicopter was a piece of cake. The PS2 controller is probably the best design for a handheld controller. If you have $20 or so to spare, you can get a Logitech USB controller that is pretty much the same. Then set it up so the top buttons rotate the helicopter while the left analog stick controls the tilt. You’ll fly like a pro in no time.
I rented Vice City for the PS2 and bought it for the PC. The PC versions of both Vice City and San Andreas are well-known for unfortunately poor controls. Due to how the controls are set up, and due to the fact that it’s hard to easily remap them to something better many things in VC or San Andreas actually require you to engage in quite a bit of finger-acrobatics. I’ve actually read that San Andreas requires you to use three keyboard buttons simultaneously, which with most keyboards/computers that isn’t technically possible.
I still prefer the PC version of VC because I can import cool-looking real cars from the 80s, use my own custom music, have almost non-existant load times, and also better graphics overall.
Flying the helicopters really is the worst aspect of the PC version, and honestly controls for almost everything else are just fine.
Basically just use the “tilt forward” button as your “accelerator” keep in mind that due to the design of the PC controls you can’t balance the “forward tilt” with the “upward motion” so that you can seemlessly make your copter move forward like in real life. Instead the forward tilt will cause your copter to gradually fly into the ground, so occasionally let off on it and keep your button on the upward button and it will correct for it.
That’s good to get you around quickly, for the minute movements needed for this mission use the “left/right” “strafe” ability of the copter to help line it up over the barrels. Also remember to make use of the backwards button as well as it can help stop your forward motion and correct your position. For turning in the stairwell I suggest using the “rotate” button which causes the copter to rotate on a 360 degree axis, which is much more useful for tight maneuvering than the “left/right” buttons which are more suited for turning the copter when you’re moving forward at a high speed (like when flying the big copters around the city.)
I’m actually a big opponent of the PS2 controller. Personally I think the XBox controller is superior. In any case PS2 controllers are the cheapest made pieces of crap ever, the shoulder buttons almost universally degrade and start sticking. After normal use the controllers will "rattle’ when you shake them. And unlike the XBox controller when you give up a big play on defense while playing NCAA Football, the PS2 controller will shatter on impact when you spike it in furious anger.
Could be… I’ve actually never used the XBox controller. I suppose I’m just used to the PS2 so I prefer it on my PC as well.
I guess my point was that using any controller would probably be easier. Controlling the tilt, rotation & acceleration all at the same time makes it pretty easy.
I’d imagine trying to fly the harrier jet in San Andreas is difficult with the keyboard as well.
Yes, that’s why I bought San Andreas for XBox and not the PC. In a review of the PC version I read that the harrier jet is practically impossible to fly on the PC version as it requires you to use like three keyboard buttons simultaneously and the mouse.
I finished the Avery RC chopper mission. I must say that explosion was worth the frustration. I basically did a bit of practice with the real helicopters beforehand(which are very useful when you piss off the cops), and when I got to the mission, flew around inside the building so I could kill the guards, the construction workers and get a layout of where the targets were.
A few more questions:
What’s the deal with the ice cream truck? I’ve purchased the ice cream factory and when I get into the truck, it tells me to distrubute the “merchandise”. Unfortunatly, I’m still at a bit of a loss how to do so. I’ve tried driving up to people on the street, trying to get them to buy but they don’t seem interested and there are no markers like in the pizza and cab missions.
2.Does the Arena in the NW corner ever actually do anything? I can’t seem to get in there.
3.Out of curiousity, is the stolen money/cocaine plot thread from the beginning of the game ever going to be resolved(as in, “I find out who took it and get it back”)? Or do I just resign myself to the fact Sonny is probably going to try to have me taken out eventually(He seems rather pissed)?
I’ve noticed garbage bags and beer bottles piling up in my mansion, no doubt left by my guards. Is there any way to get them to stop messing up my mansion(i’ve tried killing them, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. It does make for good stress relief though)?
I’ve noticed there is a sunken freighter near the boatyard on the south part of the map. Is that a reference to something or just there for the ambience?
Park the truck somewhere and hit the horn. This will turn on the ice cream truck’s song and pedestrians will line up to buy from you. You can do this anywhere, though naturally it helps if there are people around.
Go there at night (around 20:00) and the doors should be open.
Do enough stuff and Tommy will get his own missions. The plot picks up in these missions.
Nope. Resign yourself to living with a bunch of gun-toting slobs.
