The company got so manyi complaints they took it down. Ya think??
I for one think it’s just adorable! Doggies in yamulkas! Who could find that offensive?
“If the bottle lasts you eight days it’ll be a miracle!”
I think the sheep-in-a-sombrero ad is much better.
I can’t beat that.
So am I the worst person in the world for thinking this is funny? Edit: Wait a minute. This is funny too:
I love these guys, and want them to do my advertising.
I’m sold. Maybe I’ll pick up a bottle.
Here’s another one. These guys are terrific. Edit: Okay, one more..
Welp, I know what I’m getting from the candy store tonight.
It just seems to me like they were thinking one thing, while communicating another. They were probably thinking about how Chanukah is a relatively small Jewish holiday and involves eight small gifts, while Christmas is a rather large holiday for Christians and tends to involve much larger gifts. I seriously doubt anyone intended to imply that Chanukah was less important because it’s Jewish, or to play into the Jewish penny-pincher stereotype. Unfortunately, in the current climate, it’s nearly impossible to communicate the first without also communicating the second.
I thought it was hilarious.
Are you fucking kidding me?
Is that an Afghan hound wearing the yarmulke? I’m surprised CAIR didn’t get into the act to denounce the insult to Muslims.
Since this outfit’s previous ad campaigns referenced Newark and hookers to indicate how inexpensive their vodka is, following up with a Jewish holiday probably wasn’t exceptionally smart. :dubious:
God, you’re a hopeless fucking moron.
I’d buy that, but as you say, it is easily misinterpreted.
I know two things. First, the Anti-Defamation League needs to pull their panties out of their ass. It’s true that the ad was offensive, but c’mon. It was thoughtlessness, not malevolence.
On the other hand, BigT isn’t thoughtless, he’s brainless. His post reflects logic so tortured that it would confess to just about anything.
No, actually he is spot on, if you read the article, the creative lead on the campaign, who is Jewish, says exactly this: “The point of the campaign was to liken the brand to Hanukkah as the “understated” holiday of the season.”
It was extremely tone deaf, especially for a Jewish ad exec, but it wasn’t malicious.
He’s lying.
It’s the exact same joke as “Jesus saves but Moses invests!”
Seems unlikely. His explanation is more in keeping with the other ads in the campaign. Prostitutes: A hooker is a cheaper, lower quality prostitute than an escort. Actors: A reality-tv star is a cheaper, lower quality actor than a movie star. Places: Newark is a cheaper, lower quality place than the Hamptons.
So why shouldn’t I buy his explanation? Holidays: Hannukah is a cheaper, lower quality holiday than Christmas.
Tone deaf wit to be sure, but why shouldn’t I believe that this, like the other ads, was just drawing on a direct comparison of the two things mentioned? Then we can talk about whether calling Hannukah a cheaper, lower quality Christmas is itself offensive. But I’m not buying that the intent necessarily was “Wink, wink, you know, Hannukah=Jews=cheapskates,” since it’s not in keeping with the rest of the ads.
I don’t care what the explanation is. Bring on the Wodka.
Also, I interpreted the Afghan hound in the reality star one as the back of a woman’s head about to go down on the guy.
I have to wonder about these ad execs that intentionally set out to insult an ethnic group. Do they start their meetings with “So how can we lose money for our clients?”
They should have paid the SDMB for our _____, the Poor Man’s _____ thread.
Alec Baldwin Quality, Stephen Baldwin pricing.
Vicodin Quality, Tylenol and cough syrup pricing.
LA Lakers Quality, LA Clippers pricing.
