I don’t think he is great, but Tony is doing his job. Tirico, in my mind, oversteps his play-by-play responsibilities. He offfers too much commentary. I recall several times last night when he editorialized. He needs to let Jaws and Tony do that and stick to the plays.
Oh, and since this is the pit, Madden is a old fuck that can’t retire too soon.
My girlfriend didn’t. That is why Madden is so great for the casual viewer, or to bring in new fans (like the woman). You sneak in a prime-time game, compare it to reality TV, and it’s just a matter of time before they have their cute little buns sitting next to you on Sunday afternoon.
Of course he is. I think it’s positively weird that they have him doing play-by-play at all, especially given that I’ve always heard that he tests better with women than men. (Or is that the reason they hired him? Hadn’t thought about that until just now.)
BUT…he was the one who said he’s a Bears fan. I’m not judging the level of his devotion, I’m just questioning the appropriateness of a broadcaster on a national broadcast announcing which team he’s rooting for.
Don’t you just love hearing Kornheiser talk about how much fun Bret Favre is having and how he just loves to play the game? That never gets old!
I actually like Madden, Jaws, and Tirico though. Most sports announcers I really don’t mind.
Similarly, San Diego breathed a collective sigh of relief when ESPN hired Rick Sutcliffe and we all realized we would never hear his voice ruin a Padres game again.
Color me very surprised, BTW, that I’ve seen Around the Horn praised and John Madden lambasted. In the same thread, no less. One man’s trash, etc.
As for me, the one football commentator I could absolutely do without is Jack Buck. If Troy Aikman ever turns to him during a game and says, “Jack, have you ever realized you’re a total dick?” it will make my year.
I’d think that someone who posts on message boards would enjoy a show of “competitive banter”.
That’s all it is. All it purports to be.
One dude throwing out topics, and scoring people on how good their arguments are. Calling them on their bullshit. It helps that the host is (mostly) fair and intelligent and funny.
I don’t know what kind of numbers it gets, but it’s been on for a while now.
As to trashing Madden. . .fact of the matter is, there is pretty much no sports announcer anywhere who isn’t trashed.
If people know his name, he’s trashed. Almost without exception
Ya Kornheiser sucks, but I dont know him from sports. He was doing a show on Washington Post Radio (107.7?) in DC. One of the radios where I work was always turned to that station and I had to hear his inane drivel every morning. Howard Stern has inane drivel, but at least it’s provocative drivel.
The hell you say! Madden, like him or not is to football what Harry Caray was to baseball, a comfortable pair of workboots in a Bruno Magli world. Kornheiser is little more than a jibbering loudmouth with nothing of real substance to add, especially to a nationally televised game. Hell, he’s even worse than Jay Mariotti, nay, worse than Dennis Miller and his oddball, obscure references and drawn out blather.
While he may be just as big a twit, Madden makes people comfortable, and explains things to the neophyte football watcher, Kornheiser’s just an asshole.
Further, and I’m not sure who said it, but seriously, what about Esprit de Corps? What about neutrality? What about professionalism? The Vikings good-Bears bad montage was the ESPN equivalent of a high school AV club geek trying to get on the football players good side, or sneak a peek at some cheerleader panty.
Madden is the worst. he not only says the obvious but says it badly. I try to avoid any game he does.
Kornheiser is ok. He is 3rd man has little responsibility. Jaws is very good.
I liked Dennis Miller and Howard Cosell. They actually had something to say and were not afraid of controversy. They were both articulate and showed intelligence.
