A woman on CNNs “Crossfire” kept repeating that “they” refer to the United States as “The Great White Satan”. I’ve heard of “Great Satan”, but only “Great White” in reference to sharks. Am I just not well read enough?
“Great White Satan” used to be a semi-popular epithet attached to the US by the Iranian revolutionaries, but has not been featured in official Iranian government comments since soon after the election of current President (Ali) Mohammad KHATAMI-Ardakani. To use the term without locating it in context is an historical inaccuracy.

I would like to see a cite on that epithet. Like carnivorousplant, I only remember “great satan” not “great white satan”. Now, “great white hope” is a phrase you used to hear faily often (context: boxing), less so lately. I think CNN woman may have been confusing the two.
