Greer gets death threats and kicked out of his church.

Reeder, I live 1,000 miles from Clearwater and I belong to a different denomination from Judge Greer. What, exactly, am I supposed to do? I’ve already been called some pretty harsh things by Fundamentalist Christians (I’m not sure how many were Southern Baptists) because of my support for homosexuals and homosexual marriage. I have no reason to believe they’ll listen to me on this issue, especially one who goes to a church which has information about a lawsuit it filed relating its support of the ordination of a homosexual bishop.

Should I renounce my faith? Hell, bloody, NO! Not just because it’s Easter (it’s considered rather bad form to renounce one’s faith on Easter), but because I will not allow the faith which has quite literally saved my life to be hijacked by the Religious Right.

Come on, it’s basic military strategy if you’re fighting a war. You need a good 5th column on the inside, working toward your aims. Think of me as a member of the French Resistance during WWII, if you will  (anyone remember Lebeau from Hogan’s Heroes?), but I am not surrendering and I’m certainly not defending this twit.

CJ

That sounds good, Siege. Now get to work. What those idiots do to your religion isn’t my problem, but they’re royally fucking up my country.

[Bad French accent] I vill tell you zis only once. Today, I vill be infiltrating a small, unsuspecting church. If I tell you more, I vill have to kill you. [/Bad French accent]

Come to think of it, if I hurry, I can make a certain multi-denominational sunrise service and hit several targets at once! Hmmm. Vive le Resistance!

Yes, I miss 'Allo 'Allo!

Wow. You really are full of shit aren’t you? Read the first paragraph of this article in Newsweek and check the numbers.

81% of Americans identify as Christian. Seems like a majority. But let’s come back to that later.

In the same poll we find this:

78% believe (3% fewer) Jesus rose from the dead. (Seems we aren’t all one and the same, huh?)

75% (6% fewer) believe he was sent here to absolve us of our sins. (The mindless cohesion is starting to fall apart)
So let’s go to the lowest number and say only 3/4 of the population of the US can agree on the fundamental basics of Christianity.

Take a look at whatever political party you associate with. Are they representative of more than 25% of the population? How about in Washington? Would you say less than 25% are Christians? Whatever happens in Washington, and no matter how far left or right they are, most would say they are Christian. But I doubt they hate you as much as you hate them for thier faith.

I rejected your call for tolerence before, and it’s now cemented. I honestly thought you wanted to help teach tolerence, and more importantly acceptance, of homosexuality.

Now? Well, now I’ll look to more reasonable Dopers like Otto and matt_mcl for opinions on what’s happening in the real world of gays.
I never fathomed you hated me so much for believing in Christ. I’m being the polar of opposite of snarky when I say I’m truly saddened. Best of luck to you, dear gobear :frowning:

Seems we have a lot of people getting up on the cross today.

Of course, they’re two days late…

Am I the second?

I was thinking of this post milroyj made.

I was hoping not, just making sure.

Reeder,

Perhaps you’d like to open another thread and dare all Muslims worldwide to defend Al Qaeda. We smart people realize this shit doesn’t flush. Why don’t you join us?

Well, sorta.

I think this was more of a thread to paint all Christians as hypocrites. YMMV

The answer lies within the first line of your response.

I don’t think it’s right to call Greer’s minister an intolerant asshole. If he believes that pulling the plug on Terri really is murder, then throwing Greer out of the church is the least he can do. I wouldn’t want an unrepentant murderer sitting in the pew next to me.

And GOD told him that Terri’s soul is still in that body.

Religion is irrational. He’s behaving irrationally. Only to be expected.

Dear Duffer, I do not hate you, I disagree with your religion. That you cannot comprehend the difference saddens me.

Ite, missa est.

Check my post in the other thread, http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=5992762&postcount=910
(hope that works) for the best I can find on official position statements on the difference between removing heroic measures and mercy killing.

Devil’s advocate here…wouldn’t “unrepentant murderers” be the ones who need spiritual guidance the most? Prodigal sons and all that?

Well, the BTK killer’s pastor thinks so:

and we see how well that’s working out

[QUOTE]

I did not see a margin of error for that poll but if we assume + or - 3% then any of those figures could range from 75% to 81%, completely invalidating your point. At any rate, it’s hardly a strong argument against unilateral thinking to cite a 6% difference of opinion among members of a goup.

Religious question. You’d have to ask God about that, not me. Or maybe I should say the minister needs guidance from the judge.
