For some reason last night, after disconnecting from the net, ICQ wouldn’t load AT ALL. All it did was sit on the loading graphic for a minute or two before giving me an illigal operation error - but unlike most, when I checked for details, there was nothing. The only possible explanation I can think of was my hardrive overloading while ICQ was trying to log various conversations, but would that be enough to corrupt my ICQ?
Any help is appreciated - I know the best thing to do is probably try and re-install it, but I’d like to keep old logs and information if there’s any possible way I can. Anyone have any ideas?
I had some bugs with the beta of 2000b but they have come up with a replacement and it seems to be more stable, but its window does not tile with my browser window as it used to.
I tried to keep the logs by saving the whole thing, comparing folders when it was all reloaded and replacing each newly installed folder with the saved one.
This worked to a certain extent but its a long process of elimination, if someone knows exactly which folders to save and then overwrite the new with I too would appreciate it.
Oi, casdave, this is my ICQ problem thread - get yer own, bucko.
Whenever I re-format my machine (which is often because I fool with many beta-level applications), I simply move the entire ICQ folder to another HD. Later, I’ll move it back to the location it was earlier (root\Program Fles\ICQ - by default) and then re-run the install executable (or run a new one if that is my bent).
You should not need to move anything. Just re-install from the original download (or upgreade to a newer version). Then run (if it doesn’t on its own, during install) the “ICQ Database Converter.” It will find all of your old contacts etc., and you should be fine. You may lose the ‘history’ element and old conversations (I ususally do, but what I need are the contacts etc.).
BTW, I have not had the issue you describe, but I have done the above to re-install.

So there’s basically no way I can save my old conversations? I know I’m being extrememly anal about this, but there’s a few I’d really like to keep - is there a certain file I can back-up that’ll save my logs?
LDG: If you have 2000a, it’s the 2000a subdirectory in ICQ. If you have 2000b, it’s the 2000b folder. If you have something older, well, it’s probably something similar.
Just make sure that when you restore the 2000b folder, you re-register the ICQ number first otherwise I found that it doesn’t work. Once you do that you can restore the database (history, contacts and all).
Ooh… so it’d be the Db99b subdirectory then? (I never updated, so sue me.) Thanks KKBattousai and Mickazee, I really appreciate it.
