GTA 5 PC (probably) comes out 4/14

Just a note for AMD people.

I was seeing significant stuttering when driving at speed. Lowered settings and still saw it.

AMD have released a driver optimised for GTA. I ran it and all my problems went away. I upped the settings back to what they were and everything ran very well indeed.

Loving the game the 2nd time around. When I’m not driving I’m in first person view and it really changes things up in my opinion.

I buy GTA and Elder Scrolls games at full price, not much else.

Because of the 65GB download I bought GTA V on disc. Well turns out to be 7 discs, and 3 had scratches on them. Each disc takes 15 min or more to load. After disc 3 the install died with a CRC error, only option was “Ok.” It wasn’t ok. Luckily I was able to polish the scratches out with a damp rag and toothpaste, and got it to install after 2.5 hours.

Then there was still a 5GB patch to download, that took 8 hours because of my slow Internet.

Then another 360MB patch.

Finally about 7 am this morning, 13 hours later, I got to play it.

It is indeed impressive. I immediately turned off motion blur and depth of field. I could only turn textures to Normal because my video card has “only” 2GB of RAM. High textures require 2.6GB of RAM.

Everything runs smoothly on my 3-core AMD with 8GB of RAM and Nvidia 750Ti on med/high settings.

One thing that sort of impresses me over the PS3 version is if you park a car somewhere in the city it can still be there an hour later. On the PS3 version I’ve lost cars just by turning away from them for a few moments.

I also notice the higher traffic density, little/no pop-in, and no seeing the same car in traffic over and over.

All in all seems like a good port. I will try multiplayer tonight.

The Rockstar Social Club thing acknowledges that you’re activating on steam and even enters the key, but unfortunately it doesn’t import the steam friends list or anything like that. Anyway, if you guys want to play together, post your Social Club friends list name on here, and add me on steam too since it’s easier to organize that way.

My Social Club name is SenorBeef. Add me.

I’m KinthalisT on Social club.

jatna77 Feel free to add me.

I won’t be playing online until I finish SP though.

I am really enjoying this so far. The only thing that is bothering me is that during a firefight, I often want to run to the next favorable position but for some reason Franklin goes into “stealth walk mode.”

I haven’t figured out how to stop this behavior or even how to snap him out of it yet. So, if anyone knows what is going on, I would appreciate the insight.

Man, I haven’t heard the n word this much since D’jango unchained. That last bit before you first enter Franklin’s house had a musical rendition of it! L(ed)MAO.

I figured it out. The stick on the controller also presses down, which then activates sneak mode. Pretty inconvenient.

Also, I wish I could just set the radio to permanently be on the mp3 channel, instead of having to change it every time I enter a new vehicle. Hopefully there will be a mod.

How well can this game be played using mouse and keyboard?

MichaelEmouse: really well. I just prefer the controller for some things.

Playing with a m/kb is fine with some caveats.

NOTE: While I have a controller I have not used it for this.

  1. Driving is hard with a m/kb. Not really surprising though. Driving games are never good with a m/kb. Steering is all or nothing so it is lots of little taps or all too easy to over steer. Same with accelerate/brake. An example is with a m/kb I am always squealing tires from a stop light because acceleration is either off or pedal to the metal. There is no in-between.

  2. Shooting people is lots easier I would think. Head shots are pretty easy with a m/kb IMHO.

  3. Since I have not played with a controller yet I do not know if this is a m/kb thing but I find getting positioned to do things a little finicky (get in a car, open something and so on). It is not bad but seems just a tad fussy.

My name is: Zerowantuthri

(read it as 0,1,2,3…most people online just call me Zero to make things easier but I have been called many names and many not flattering so call me whatever you like)

I am running at 1440p as well using a GTX980 with almost all things maxed (shadows are a step down I think). Runs really smooth.

Here are a few screenshots I took:

I will say I think this is the worst music in any GTA game ever. There are a lot of stations and I can tolerate two of them and even they are hit and miss.

I started with GTA Vice City and maybe that spoiled me but this line up really sucks IMO.

I have read there is a way to get your own music to play in game but not sure how that is done.

That said the commercials which are fantastic and well worth listening to. The commercials are (so far) hilarious.

Also, as an aside, the banter can be great too. E.G. I picked up a guy in my tow truck and his bitching that I took too long was great…don’t want to spoil it.

If it helps and for those who care here is a nifty website that lays out how the different graphics settings affect the game. It has numerous pictures with a slider that allows you to see what the setting does.

Pretty nifty.

I agree that the music sucks for the most part. I did like that Genesis song in the cut-scene. It really fit.

Here is how to use your own mp3s for windows:

In Windows 7 the folder is located here:

I use mouse/keyboard for all the running around and battles. I switch to controller when I’m trying, unsuccessfully, to drive. My kid uses mouse/keyboard for everything, though.

I don’t understand the comment about on/off driving with mouse/keyboard, though – I think the accelerator is a button on the controller (left top button?), not one of the joysticks. Maybe if you have one of those car controller set ups it’s different.

My kid and I are PabloSean, video game nicknames for both of us.

I don’t know how much online play I’ll do, though – the only online play I’ve ever done is in the Rockband series (and a few minutes in Quake III, which was no fun). In the Rockband series, I dominated on drums against what I imagined were pro drummers but which were probably 6 year olds.

Yup, I thought acceleration was all or nothing with a joypad too. Steering might be a problem, though. Mouse steering would make shooting from a vehicle a chore/impossible.

Anyone know if it’s possible to check out the mods for GTAV on Steam without having bought it?

Xbox 360 and PS4 controllers have analog triggers that are typically bound to gas and brake, so you’ve got a full range of analog controls for that. The 360 seems better in this regard with greater travel. If you’re steering it’s probably better to steer with the keyboard and keep the mouse for shooting, although it’s well worth it to pick up a wired 360 controller or a wireless one + receiver.

Driving feels too easy in this game - I’m already able to whip around town and dodge through traffic going max speed without hitting anything - the cars are too forgiving.

Edit: There won’t be any steam workshop mod support nor are there any mods for the game out currently. They didn’t make the game modder friendly at all, since they’re stupid and don’t want people massively improving their game and increasing its appeal and longevity. The encrypted data files will probably get cracked at some point and people will create mods, but they won’t be smooth, easy, and officially supported. Dumb dumb dumb.

I have a wired XBox controller that I use on my PC and I’m pretty sure that the accelerator and brake are assigned to the left top and right top buttons. Maybe they are also assigned to an analog trigger, though.

Man, I couldn’t be having a more different driving experience than you. And, you’re right about the mouse shooting – now that I’ve assigned the mouse to steer, I don’t know how I’ll shoot while driving. I may have to reassign the A/D keys to steer (or, just stick with the controller, I guess).

The game doesn’t seem to allow you to custom bind every trigger on a gamepad, although perhaps there’s a way, but you can select from 3 or 4 different configuration profiles.

I’m quite sure the default is for the triggers to control the gas and brake, as is standard for pretty much any racing game made in the last 10 years.

See this image - the triggers are the ones that control the gas/brake. By “top two buttons” I assume you mean the shoulder buttons - those definitely aren’t the normal controls for gas/brake, I’m not sure if they’re available as that in any configuraton. Probably not, since obviously analog controls for them is a problem.
