Guacamole or hummus?

I like guac but it does not like me at all so easy choice.

Personally I find guacamole more flavorful but hummus can be really good too IMO.

The thing about hummus is it is very amenable to modification. So garlic or peppers or any number of spices or vegetables can be added and you can also skip the chickpeas and make if from beans and other things.

It has so many variations it is hard to pin down. Plain hummus is good but nothing to write home about. When jazzed up though it can be fantastic. Only downside to that is sorting through the myriad options available.

I don’t like either avocados or guacamole so the choice is simple for me - give up guac. I don’t eat it anyway so I’ll never miss it.

Hummus, on the other hand, I do enjoy.

Guacamole is delicious and fits better into my personal health. Hummus is tolerable generally and can be very good, but I never really crave it.

Part of what prompted me to create this poll is an inexplicable craving I’ve developed for guacamole that started maybe a month ago and has not abated.

I do like hummus, but I’ve been eating guac or plain avocado most every day for weeks and I still can’t get enough of it.
mmm

Guacamole has a slight grassy/underripe flavor that I don’t like. Maybe that would go away if cooked, but apparently people don’t like it cooked. I’ve never tried it. Maybe it would go away if the avocado was ripened more but, again, people seem to have determined that the correct age has that flavor. I haven’t tried cooked guac nor overripe avocado, so possibly they do both suck and there’s no hope. I don’t know.

Guac works alright if you put a little bit on a taco or something else with stronger flavors than it, but then it’s not really doing much but adding health. It, otherwise, disappears into the dish. At the moment, that’s the only way I “enjoy” it.

Hummus can be amazing. Bad hummus is forgettable but it’s still fine to eat.

Easy pick.

Hmmm…if I’m also giving up the base ingredient, then I’d stay with hummus and give up guacamole and avocados. I mean, I love avocados, but I love various garbanzo-based dishes (chana masala, falafel, various dishes made with gram [chickpea] flour, etc.)

If it’s just about the dip and the above are allowed as long as I don’t try to cheat the spirit of the question by creating “not guac” and “not hummus,” then I’d probably stick with the guac, and give up the hummus. But that’s a really, really tough choice. The thing is, baba ganoush can fill that hummus hole in my life (and, actually, I prefer it to hummus), but nothing can substitute adequately for guacamole.

Actually, now that I’ve put my thoughts to words, I will vote guacamole/avocado, even if I have to give up the base ingredients, as there are plenty of legumes that can substitute fine for chickpeas, but nothing, to me, that can adequately replace avocado.

I’m more hummus than guacamole, though I love avocados. I’m so-so about guacamole, and I bought some awful ‘individual’ servings of guacamole, which turned out to be near liquified avocado. Ewww. the texture was awful. It could be used in a salad dressing, maybe…I love hummus, have seldom tried a ‘bad’ one. I hear there are chocolate and vanilla sweet varieties out. Though I have made surprisingly delicious little cakes using a can of beans or garbanzos instead of flour, on some diet years ago, I will have to pass.

I agree, except the exact opposite.

Guacamole, of course. Hummus sucks and should stay in the soil where it belongs.

Surprised so many people like garbanzo beans. They’re grainy and blah to me. Avocados are delicious

I agree. I hate them too.

But I love hummus which is light years better.

Those awful beans are transformed. You should really give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised!

If you ever get to Chicago let me know and I will take you to a place that has super yummy hummus (as an appetizer…I’ll pay for your main course too as long as you try the hummus).

This. Guacamole is just nasty. Those of you who say you hate hummus haven’t had good hummus with good bread.

Also, I thought baba ganoush was that song by The Who?

sobs I can’t… I can’t do it!

I will lead the revolution against our mean mustardy overlords. Give me hummus and guac or give me death!

I know you’re funnin’, but it’s basically hummus made with roasted eggplants instead of chickpeas.

I know, just a joke  Best hummus and baba ganoush I ever had was the Turkish Restaurant in Riyadh. Just awesome!

So, last night I made some nice hamburgers on the grill. When I bought the ground beef, I also bought small containers of hummus, Cole slaw, and guacamole. It was a very fine dinner.

A dip that can be augmented in countless ways or slime?

No brainer. Hummus. I’ve had dessert hummus that was like brownie batter. I have had few avocado dishes in my life, and the sliminess outweighed any flavor it might have added. I couldn’t discern a flavor anyway.

Wait, if we choose guac, we’re giving up garbanzos altogether?

If it’s simply a choice between guac and guac-like stuff on the one hand, versus hummus and hummus-like stuff on the other hand, guac wins easily. But I include garbanzos in chili, soups, salads - all sorts of non-hummus-related uses.

If I have to give up all that, forget it, I’m giving up the avocados instead.

Anyway, the POLL says I’m just choosing between guac and hummus, so I’m choosing GUAC in the POLL. The OP says I’d also be giving up garbanzos, so I’m choosing HUMMUS here in the THREAD.

I’m not actually that passionate about either, but I cook WAY more eastern mediterranean food than mexican, so taking away hummus would cause some serious menu balancing issues.
