The character? Not remotely. But it has nothing to do with her looks. She’s an emotionally needy, socially awkward person who has little sense of her own self value.

After thinking about this for a while, I have come to the conclusion that she might be attractive on an invisible level.
That is, if she was invisible and I was invisible, one of us might then be attractive.
But you know what?
I strongly doubt that she gives shit. After all, she has millions of dollars in her bank account. So, why would she care what any of us think?

The character is not sexy, not even remotely. She isn’t physically attactive in any level and is obnoxiously insecure and let’s herself be pushed over by her boyfriend on a level very close to abuse (although that got less over the seasons). I love intelligent women, heck I’m married to an M.D, but intelligent stupid women are anatema.
Mayim Bialik is prettier tan Amy, but in no picture than I’m aware of can she be categorised as sexy. Pretty? Sure, but her nose is too distracting to get her to sexyville.
Penny is amazingly sexy (as is Kaley Cuoco). Bernardette is sexy and Melissa Rauch even more.
She is undeniably homely in her role. As plain, vanilla, bland as it comes.
That’s the point of her character…
Also, the most attractive female by far on BBT was Raj’s sister, who was pretty stunning in my book.
Really, all Amy has to do is lose the glasses and change her hairstyle.

Bernadette, on the other hand…
Bialik has said that since her child actor (or should I say ‘actress’ days) she knew she had the face of a character actor. So, she may not be conventionally naturally beautiful (as in wake up in the morning and just drag a come through your hair beautiful) but there are LOTS of ingenue type of actresses out there who in paparazzi photos where they’re not wearing makeup and just on a grocery run, look pretty unattractive. And there’s a lot of photographic evidence out there that with the right makeup and hair style, Bialik is not unattractive at all.
Bialik tends to dress modestly as part of her religious practices and some might call this style ‘unflattering’. I’ve read somewhere that as Amy, the wardrobe people add some body padding to her wardrobe to make her appear plainer.
I think Bialik might be the best actor in the cast of TBBT. I think she’s really convincing when Amy “shifts gears”, as in that scene where she offers a cage for the not-a-blue bird that invaded Sheldon’s apt. It the cage for one of her monkeys… “… the monkey slipped on a banana peel and broke his neck. It was tragic… and hysterical!”
Yeah, No.
Whenever she gets upset with Sheldon, it’s very believable and realistic. There’s a subtlety to it that invites empathy with her situation.

Why is is sexist to find a given woman unsexy? As I wrote upthread, I find Amy-the-character beautiful but not sexy (possibly because she trips my big brother instincts), while Bernadette is both sexy and beautiful (she’s got a great face and is just the right shade of bitchy) while Penny is neither (I don’t like her face and her boobs are too big). Am I sexist for holding these opinions?
